I am pretty sure they give you a new one when you order a carb rebuild kit (they do not give you a new slow speed needle so that is why I asked). If you have the carb apart you might as well rebuild it with a new kit.

Yeah im gonna get a rebuild kit. I had it apart once but that was just to see if the motor even ran at all haha. These motors seem to run forever.

Re: 74 johnson not peeing after pump replacment

Just butting in here, got the same thing going on but with a 1974 9.9. Also know that the 9.9 and the 15 are identical except carbs. My question is, Has anyone tried putting a Overboard Water Indicator on one of these 74' to 76' motors, and if so, was it a task? Thinking about putting one on mine. Have been looking at the Leeroy's Ramblings. Good stuff. Would like to have one just to pacify my brain.

My second question is, would the T-stat cover be warmer than the cylinder head and cylinder walls?

Still trying to get the darn thing to idle for more than a couple of seconds and without messing with the throttle.

Hi chipster. You can add a pee stream to these old motors. I'm actually in the middle of adding one to my '66 20 hp right now. I hope to have a how-to thread up tomorrow. Scroll down about half way in the first link below for they method I 'm using. The t-stat cover should not get very hot while operating although the head will. If you're running poorly, you need to check the Big 3: compression (over 80 psi per cylinder with both cylinders within 10% of eachother), Spark (should jump a 1/4" gap with a bright blue spark), fuel (rebuild carb and inspect fuel pump and lines for leaks, or ethanol damage). Confirm each aspect individually, then try restarting the motor. This link may help too.

Chipster, im kind of having the same problem, wont stay running for very long. Waiting on some parts to come in, some things im rebuilding just for insurance on the big water. I was looking at doing that water indicator also, just not sure if I want to or not yet, good idea but its more money I gotta spend haha

Yeah, we do live in America. Money, money, money. I'm gathering materials where and when I can as well. But it's nice to have a bunch of old parts bins just sit'n round.

Big 3, Compression - between 110 and 115 on both top and bottom, Spark - shes a pop'n hot, Fuel - just put new pump on, will pull carb tonight and give'er a good cleaning.

But before that happens, I get everything set, fuel, neutral, throttle to start, choke, it will pop off and run for a few seconds as long as I leave the choke on and mess with the throttle then goes dead. If I turn choke off goes dead or will not start. I can get it to run about two or three times then nothing. Also, the rich/lean adjustment, the knob comes off rather easy so I don't know if it is where it needs to be, how do I need to set it so that it is in the good? Any IDs?

I think its 2 turns from seated but I could be wrong. Mines having a similar problem. I picked up the carb rebuild kit today, but I wont be home until sunday night.

Hi chipster. I think you found your problem. You can get a rebuild kit and float right here at iboats for about $20. Your local NAPA may also be able to order the same Sierra brand kit.

Yup your making progress and that's good. Thanks for the pictures. I made a last minute decision to order a new float for my 6HP the other day but kept thinking I probably wouldn't need it and should just order the needle and seat. Now I'm really glad I included it. Rick.

Re: 74 johnson not peeing after pump replacment

Slightly stupid question...could a deteriorated float cause running issued at low idle? Like if the float is all still intact (like in the pics BEFORE everything was taken apart) could it cause problems? Im assuming the answer is yes since the float may not be floating the same as it was brand new, but I am unsure. Can anyone chime in here? Im kinda curious because the float on my motor is all still in tact but im wondering if because it is so old that it isnt working the same as it used to and if that could be whats causing the running issues.

Re: 74 johnson not peeing after pump replacment

The biggest issue with the old cork floats is that they can/do break down over time, particularly with modern ethanol in the gas. These tiny bits of cork then clog the various passage ways in the carb and impair performance. Some people try resealing the original float, but usually end up getting a new one. The replacement float is plastic and will last forever. After it's replaced, you should only need to rebuild the carb at the start of every season and be done with it.

So someone11, how is the progress or did everthing turn out with your 74? My 74 9.9 is running like a champ. After the fuel pump, water pump, carb rebuild and float, and a rewind starter spring, she purs like a cat. Now on to my 93 15hp.
