Re: 74 Mercury 500 50 hp

While I'm waiting on my parts to come in, does anyone know where to locate a tach that plugs into the front of the control box. I have a tach that I used at the top of flywheel the other day to get an idea of my rpms, which I'm not sure if thats the accurate place to read from. I've checked Old Mercs and iboats and found nothing. Thanks

Re: 74 Mercury 500 50 hp

I got the new pump kit today and installed the diaphram. Now the bulb seems to work as it should. I got it started and it sounds better than it has in the past. It will start when bulb is firm and throttle lever is at least half way up, but after about a minute she dies. Choke it one time and then take the choke off and fires right up. While it's running I try to idle down a bit from half or a little more than half throttle and immediately dies again. When it's running there is a intermitten studder or miss, maybe the idle screws which are 1 1/2 turns from lightly seated. Have already checked floats, not cracked or taking on fuel, checked needles and seats which are new and seem to be fine. Fuel lines are new and bulb now stays pretty firm when motor is running. To me it seems like it is running long enough to empty the bowls and then some, but I don't know. Tried to pump the bulb when she's dying but does no good. Thanks to all for the help.

Re: 74 Mercury 500 50 hp

this is ny start up proceedure, idle lever up, pump bulb, hold choke and start, release choke , then pump choke button as it starts to die, picks back up , lower idle lever. some times have to hit choke a couple of time to keep runing. of course mine is a 1350. but the are both lines, and cold natured.

I know each one is different, but how long would you say it should take it to warm up? Next time I'll put the clock to it because it seems to be so consistent when it dies out. With this new diaphram it's running longer than before but it still seems to be a fuel problem. Just out of curiosit (sp) could it be linc and sync. The way that it sputters it needs some adjusting but I don't want to put it on the water untill ti can at least run for longer period of time.

now mine is finely tuned it takes it about a 30 second to settle down , and about 1 1/2 minutes to warm up. even at that inline 6's you practically have to flood to get them to start, then they have to settle. very, very gas hungry when cold. if you want the linc and sinc email me click my name for address. ask for linc & sinc merc

Re: 74 Mercury 500 50 hp

O.K. I took it to a local mechanic, so here it is.

Started and Ran- Cuts out and dies.
Checked compression
#1----125
#2----125
#3----125
#4----115
Water on #4 spark plug--Possible cracked cylinder.
Checked timing--O.K.
Bottom carb leaks, choke sticks.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, but I think I'm screwed! What would a 1974 15' Kingfisher with trolling motor, fish finder, and 74' merc 500 50 hp for an anchor bring these days?

Thanks again you guys have been great.
