EDIT: I started this thread for the the paint removal process I did to the Rebel. As I did more to the boat this thread evolved into a restoration (really more of a preservation) thread. At some point I will post up a little more on how the boat got from being a freebie on a car message board to on the water.

I decided to see what was under the orange paint on my Rebel. Looks like I got lucky. It's not perfect but it looks as good or better than the rest of the boat. There was a bad spot in the gel on both sides where the fuel tanks pushed out on each side. I ran some vinyl that looks like an old Pontiac sign to cover this and placed a short piece of 1X4 inside to displace the pressure from the top corner of the tanks.

Step 1 - Klean Strip fiberglass paint stripper
Step 2 - 400 wet paper (by hand)
Step 3 - 1000 wet paper (by hand)
Step 4 - Turtle wax green compound (low speed polisher)
Step 5 - Meguire's #49 oxidation remover (low speed polisher)
Step 6 - wax it (by hand)

This worked for me. You mileage may vary. I know there are a lot of pros out there that frown on some of the products I used. It was what I had and it worked well for me. The stripper is water clean up.

Thanks Bear. This boat has a long story. One of these days and piece ithe story together and post it all here.

That Cuda is a nice piece you have there. Looks like you did a great resto on the Bayliner too. I'll have to go back and read through it later. Right now, It's time to hit the lake for one last time this year.

Cool, looks really clean that way! Also looks a little breeze out there, lol! I was thinking the other day when it was 72 how I should sneak the boat out one more time!

Thanks Arch. There was a light wind. It was 63* and 7 - 10 MPH winds. Still a great day at the lake.

Re: Stripping paint

Thanks Vegas.

Rub rail is done. I have a set of Oldsmobile over transom headers from Bassett I am going to modify over the winter to for the Pontiac and I need to recover the back of one seat. Then I can stick a fork in this baby and focus solely on the cruiser.

Picked up a metal flake steering wheel from Speedway Motors. I like the vintage look of this boats evolution. I need to get it out into the sun to get a good picture.

She may be no beauty queen but she has sure aged gracefully. If you dont think so send her my way. I will show her the love. Great boat dude

Re: Stripping paint

Thanks pst. I had a guy working on modifying the Oldsmobile headers I have but the deal fell through. This was a much easier way to go. Pontiac boat stuff is pretty scarce. I was glad to find these.
