Hey Guys...1981 Chrysler 75 hp 3 cyl two stroke. Launched the other day, got about 100 yds. from shore and it popped forcefully out of forward gear and wouldn't go back in. Still had reverse at that time. Put it in the test tank (or horse trough, whichever you prefer), and now have no reverse either. Not even trying to go in gear. Cable problem, linkage problem, where should I start? If the prop was spun, wouldn't it still go into gear? Thanks for any advice.

Sounds like the pivot pin broke in the lower unit. It could be be your shift linkage somehow disconnected. I am not sure on a 75 but on the 55s there are six bolts holding the covers on just above the lower unit and the linkage adjustment should be there. First check on the towere where the cables connect to the motor. Verify it is moving the shift linkage there. If it is you will have to remove the lower unit. If you are able to pull the shift linkage out of the lower unit your pivot pin is broken and will have to be replaced. It could be worse hopefully that is all it is.<br />Good luck

You need to take the cover off the motor and have someone move the throttle lever and you watch and make sure both cables are moving. The shift cable will move forwards and backwards from the neutral position...the throttle will move only forward from the idle, or neutral and back. If the cables aren't doing their job then the problem is in the control, or the cable. If the cables are doing their assignment then follow the linkage down the motor till you find the problem. If the problem is not in the control box or cableslook just under the carbs where the linkage connects, or just below that under the cowling where there is another connection. Chances are it's not the gearbox, but that always a possibility. If you need more help holler. :)

Re: 75 Chrysler ....... lost my mojo!!

Thanks for your comments and advice. The shift rod where it enters the lower unit does move up and down in response to moving the throttle, if that tells you anything. It normally makes a sort of shuddering noise and a clunk when it goes into gear but it doesn't do that now. Is the next step to remove the lower unit or could there be something out of adjustment with the linkage not allowing it to go into gear? Thanks for you guys help!

Re: 75 Chrysler ....... lost my mojo!!

I am not sure about a 70 hp but I believe there is a cotter pin that attaches the shift rod to the lower unit. Verify this is still connected. It may have broken. I have a 45 hp and the upper and lower shift linkage is attached by a 1 inch nut with reverse threads. If you can take the motor covers off on your motor look to see what kind of connection you have. Verify with someone else shifting for you that the upper and lower linkages are moving. If they are chances are the pivot screw is broken which will require you removing the lower unit and it will also require a tear down of the lower unit to replace the broken pin.

Found out my problem....whoever had worked on the lower unit last didn't seat the bearing on the driveshaft causing the pinion to grind the shi* out of the forward and reverse gear. Need to replace all 3 gears, anybody know the best place to order to the set?

You might have luck at ebay. It might be cheaper to just bid on a LU.

The clutch is no longer available. The forward gear cost about 400 bucks and the reverse gear is sold with a new bearing cage for around 450 bucks. A complete new lower unit is around 2900 bucks. If you dont have luck on ebay it might be time to look for a new motor and part out the rest of yours on ebay.

Re: 75 Chrysler ....... lost my mojo!!

Last time I looked the guy wanted $150 for the set...including the shift dog, might even have the bearings and races(it was the propshaft that bent, and case that was saltwaterlogged) If that's ok with you I'll see if he still has 'em and for what price he want now. Since it was a year or so ago since I talked to this guy I'm not sure he still has the gearset...just a thought :)

Try Fairwinds Marina. They have a website. They have lots of good stuff for Chysler. They are not cheap but they keep my old motor in parts.
