I have a 75hp Johnson. It was on a fiberglass boat and running fine as far as I knew. I never put it in the water, but on a hose it sounded great.

I recently moved it to a pontoon boat. The first time I started it, it started fine. I tried killing the motor by turning the key and it kept running. Sometime during this process I touch the key and the metal railing on the boat and it shocked me. I unplugged the gas line and it was taking forever to die, so with the motor cover off, I worked the throttle to speed up the motor. I was running the motor hooked to a hose (water everywhere). I think I rested my forearm on the motor housing while working the throttle and I got a really strong shock.

I don't know why I started having problems after moving the motor. I didn't drop it or anything, so nothing should be different. I suspect the ignition switch might be out since it won't kill the motor, but I don't know since all the high voltage is around. The ignition switch has 6 terminals with all the wires unplugged from the motor, I check for continuity. I assumed key position 1 would produce continuity between something like terminals 1 & 4 and key position 2 between terminals 2 & 5 etc., but I didn't get anything like that.

Any suggestions?

For the shock, it's probably lack of grounding. That's all I can think of. About the turning off problem, it's either the faulty ingnition swtich or bad wiring.

Good luck,

Nam
