I have a 1994 '75 HP Mariner (3 cylinder) that intermittently loses spark on the middle cylinder.

Just yesterday, I started it up, and all thee cylinders were firing and about five minutes later, the RPM's dropped so I pulled the plug wire and was no longer getting any spark.

A friend told me that the coil to that cylinder was but, but I don't want to replace a $30 coil just to find out I wasted my money. Anybody else have an idea?

Did you try swapping the coils and see if the problem follows to another cylinder? If it does then it's probably the coil.

Try swampping coils, if the coil fails on this plug then it is the coil as erniex has said. If the same plug/cylinder is still dead then your cdi switching box is shot and it will need to be changed around 150 to 300.00 depending if you get used or new. You have put new plugs in all cylinders already i assume. Good luck hope you can get running.

Just swapped coils and it's still hitting on all three. Next time it cuts out, I hope it's the top cylinder. 150-300 bucks! ouuch.

Update 3/31/05

Middle cylinder is still a dead soldier. The local dealership told me it was either the switch box or the stator. Can someone tell me how to do a diagnostics test to determine which one is bad?

Thanks
