Just a note. It took 2 months of testing and retesting all systems on my 75 Merc to try to find out why I had no spark on all 3 cyls (It's winter so boat is just sitting in my garage until spring thaw anyway) just to find that the two yellow leads from the stator had overheated at the connectors, melted the connector insulation and fused together, thus shorting the wires to the regulator/ rectifier. Thanks the motor Gods that no permanent damage occured. It happened after trolling at crawl speed for two hours on a salmon troll fishing trip. My guess is that the low speed caused the wires to overheat. Just a guess. Anyways, for preventive maintenance, take the tie wraps off those wire connectors and inspect the wires for burnt areas. also, check that the connectors are tight. The wires looked fine until I decided to take the tie wraps off and look harder at the connectors. I repaired the connections and the engine runs fine (except, what are those brown wires I talked about on last post)?
