'75 Johnson 135 V4 ($100 Down the SH*t*r, Water Pump)

I just replaced the water pump and all the thermostat parts I finally put it all back together and hooked up the water and started Her. I didnt see any water yet so i waited a minuite to see if the thermo. would open. Well i waited 4 MIN. and shut it off , pulled the tubes between thermo and block not a drop. So Pulled the lower unit today and it was all fried the Impeller was ate up and the housing was partially melted So like i said $100 down the ****ER. I checked the thermo parts they are ok . What is my prob. I cleaned all the passages with compressed air.

May be a silly question, but I assume you installed the impeller key? Another known problem is the impeller housing grommet. I have seen many times where the water tube shoved the grommet into the impeller housing, restricting water flow. You may want to check these key things.

Although if you were on muffs, the hose would force feed the cooling system. If in a barrel, be sure you have the water level high enough.

As Mr Hadley said, how did you supply cooling water?

check around on that pump price its high
i have used sierra and had no probs 35 $
check to make sure you key didnt break
clean out housig and plate and cup clean old rubber off you probaly only need impellar if it was a full kit that you just put on it thats only 15$
napa if yall ahve one uaually 24 hour diliv.
make sure you have water hooked up right or run in barrell
to see if its pumping . if it doesnt have tale tell then you might cosider that or pressure gauge

I can't say that I know every OMC motor but my own experience is that the thermostat usually opens pretty quickly. Next time around, I strongly suggest that you not wait 4 minutes. Had you waited much longer, the condition of your water pump might have been the least of your worries.

One other thought ... are you sure you put the impeller in the right way. I have seen more than one occassion where someone put the impeller in the pump housing, while holding the open side of the housing face-up. The problem with doing that is that you have remember that a clockwise orientation of the impeller blades becomes counter-clockwise once the housing is flipped over and installed on the driveshaft.

I think that you had the impeller in place and the key correct or it would not have turned and cooked it. With an new impeller, it would have turned itself in the right direction if the water was there, even if you had it turned backwards.

A blocked thermostat would not cause a water pump to burn up on your motor.

It is probable that the water did not fill the pump before you started the motor. Try to wait until you see a good flow of water out from the drains above before you start the motor.

It is very important with the 1975 system that both water tubes are working properly so that the returning water gets in the pump.

it's not the stat, it is that water is not getting to the pump. clear the passages in the lower unit. i when thru 3 impellers and 2 kits on one motor. yes, the impeller disintergrated, and melted the housing, rubber ran down the water inlet.

Thanks every one for your replies. I hooked the water up with muffs although not waiting long to start, I really don't even think that the water even got to the pump. I'm pretty sure i put the impeller in right and the key. I don't believe the water pump housing is salvagable it warped the side and melted part of the METAL ring so its trash. I looked for a pump for about a month during the winter and the only thing i found was a pump from I27 Marine, who just ordered it from brp. If any one knows of a better price please let me know.

The prices here are reasonable. I guess iboats does not carry that kit.

Before installing though, figure out why the cooling water was not getting to the pump. Do you have a manual for that motor?

thanks, yeah i looked on iboat but had no luck. I do have the manual and i'm going to clean every little crevice even if it takes me all year.

Yeah i have a friend who is a drag boat racer and he had trouble finding it for under $100, So like i said $100 down the ****er
