No compression? As in "0"? If so, pull the head and have a look.

c/6

Hooty

No compression is a no brainer. Automatic pull head and check pistons, might as well do all. I bet it is a rebore. He who hesitate is lost

what is a rebore? nobrainer maybe for someone who knows...obviously its the rings...no metal fragments in there....any one know a simple way to replace bottom ring?

barrie,

A rebore involves the complete disassembly of the engine.

Once disassembled, the engines cylinder bores are cut or drilled to an oversize. Once that is done, an oversize piston and rings are fitted to that or all cylinders.

Like the others said, pull the head, I'll bet a it's a bit more serious than a bad ring. Even if the ring(s) did let go, it has more than likely done some serious damage.

Not so fast.

Take the head off and have a look. At this point, a disassembled engine isn't going to be worth any less.

Would it be easier to split the motor from the carb side or the plug side....easier to get at pistons?

OK - now we have your attention. Your homework assignment is to follow Djohns19 lead and pop the head off. No big deal.

Dont panic. Dont jump to conclusions. Dont start looking for shortcuts.

Good luck!

So..... should i go from the plug end or the carb end? What abot the wheel on the top does that all have to come out?

You dont have to take the flywheel off to take the cylinder head off. Just pop the cylinder head and lets see what we have to work with.

Actually the best thing to do is get a service manual first. The OE (Evinrude / Johnson) ones are best.

Let us know when you get one.

good luck!

Precisely how did you determine that there is no compression in the bottom cylinder? Who did the compression test? How was is done. Engine should be warm, plugs out, full throttle, screw in compression tester. What are the compression numberes in psi for each cylinder?

Yes, that sounds like there is a problem. But before you run off and do anything to the engine, buy a screw in compression tester at an auto parts store and do it right. If you still get the same picture, tell us the numbers, and then you can go from there. Rebuilding an outboard involves a bit of work and you need to explore your options before you commit to anything.

Your motor has a serious internal issue. You're going to have to take everything off if you plan on rebuilding it, so take whatever you have to take off to remove the head. Could be a broken rod, scorched piston, holed piston, broken crank, any number of things. What you've got now is junk in one piece. Start removing stuff to get the head off and go from there. If the bottom piston moves when you turn the motor over, then it might be salvageable with as little as a honing and new piston & rings, or as much as a complete overhaul. You also have to decide whether or not you want to spend the $500-$1500 to have it rebuilt - it is after all a nearly 30-year old motor. If you do most of the work yourself, you can get it down to the lower end of the scale. If you have someone else do it, it will be on the higher end, and possibly (probably) higher still.

You can get a manual through your local West Marine, Amazon.com, here at I-boats (see bottom of page), etc. Seloc and Clymer both have positives and negatives for aftermarket manuals.

If you get in over your head, you can part it out on eBay and use the procedes to get a newer motor. Good lower units bring a premium during the summer season as Joe Boater doesn't want to wait for Mr. Mech to rebuild that unit that was bashed on the rocks.
- Scott

well i took the head off...bottom piston is done...all i need is a new piston...I know it is work but if u seen this boat run on just one(obviously) cylinder then i think it is salvageable. I am not a rich person so i definately can't afford a new motor...I just have this boat because my son and i enjoy our time on it...well did enjoy it...Its worth salvagin to me

Does the cylinderwalls look OK ?

If you want to repair it on a really low budget - get a piston from a scrapyard, hone and rering both cylinders. I´ve done this a couple of times - helping people who couldnt spend much out, both with good result. Cylinderwalls in good shape however is a must. You will basicly need a gasket set, 2 sets of rings and a manual.

Re: 75 Johnson 50 hp...no compression bottom piston.....help???

While you are in there you need to figure out why the lower piston went away. Overheat, lean mixture, lack of oil, etc. Don't just replace the piston and melt another one.
