Hi Guys, Im having a problem with my outboard and trying to get it in the shop, just looking for a heads up on what could be the problem.

Here is a letter I sent to my repairman to describe to you whats happening.

""""""""""""""""
Hello #######, yesterday on the lake my wife went to shut off the key to turn the motor off and she turned it a few times in each direction, the whole ignition was turning in the gear box , when she finally turned it off i could hear something spinning in the outboard like a cylinoid or something.

I disconnected the battery and the spinning stopped but when i plug it back in it starts again.

Do you think its from the ignition switch?

Also how soon until I can come and see you for the repair & a tune up?

not sure on the exact year but here is a picture

It sounds like the starter is spining the whole time. If so it is either a bad ign keyswitch or a stuck solenoid. The latter is unusual.

By your description of turning the key each way a few times leads me to believe that the wiring to the back of the ignition switch is twisted up,shorting the solenoid circuit, causing the solenoid to stay energized.
