Hi all, it's been awhile since I have been doing anything outboard related but just decided ot get one of my boats ready for the spring so bought a 1979 Evinrude 70..condition of motor really unknown except the compression is good and I do know I need a few parts.

There is a parts motor locally that I can buy tomorrow that recently blew up but was a good runner up until that day which was very recent. This motor is a 1975 though.

I have been looking at some of the part numbers I need but they don't seem to "say" they work for the same models but since the motors look the same to my newbie eyes I thought I better ask the ones who would know..you guys.

So I have a 1979 70 HP..which needs the following "that I know of for sure":
1. Tilt tube $40 (ebay)
2. Starter solenoid $22 (ebay)
3. Prop (haven't priced)
4. Engine mounting bolts (haven't priced)
5. Impeller / water pump (haven't priced)
6. Spark plugs (haven't priced)

The 1975 70 HP has all of the above in good condition..plus good coils, clean carbs, etc. basically every thing besides main power head which blew a piston.

Can someone please tell me if these parts would indeed work for the 1979 model?

I did measure the tilt tube today and couldn't get an accurate measurement of the diameter but the length seemed fine...I would 'think" the diameter should be pretty standard but I have paid too much for "thinking" in the past already..lol

Thank you much :)

Scanning the manual I have found the following so far...
Charge Coils:
Correct resistance is 870-930 ohms on models prior to 1976 and 555-705 ohms on models after 1975.

Breakerless Ignition After 1978
All 70 and 75 hp models after 1978, and 1986 and later 60 hp models, are equipped with a capacitor discharge ignition (CDI) system.

So it's looking like some parts are not interchangeable for sure...I just don't know to what extent.

I did see they use the same plugs..but I don't want another parts motor just for the plugs...lol

The early 1975 production had a different shift system for the lower unit.----Identified by a link at 45 degrees on the side of the motor.--------The bits and pieces for the CD ignition are different on the 1975 model , but the principle is the same.-------If it is cheap it would be a good donor motor.

I used to have a 1976 Johnson 70 HP, and I recall that I had good interchangability on parts from 1973-1978. After 1978 there were a bunch of changes, including gearcase, carburetors and a bunch of electrical stuff. If in doubt, look at the link that jb93 posted.

In terms of the parts you need for the '79 motor, You probably don't want to pick up an impeller or spark plugs from a used motor anyway. The starter solenoid is cheap enough to buy new, and a prop is easy enough to pick up on its own via e-bay used, or here on iboats brand new.

Good luck

jb93..thanks for the links, I had already been looking up the parts on the one site as well as Iboats...but the other link is was another good one to look at as well.

racerone..I can get the motor for $150 or $180 with the controls
(I don't need controls but could sell them for much more to help cover cost of motor).
So With what I need...I was thinking that was a decent price??

eavaga...the plugs and water pump in donor motor are virtually new..the solenoid, prop and tilt tube are used but working and in good shape.

The parts I really need right now are NOT showing as the same part numbers...BUT I really can't understand that as of yet.
For instance..
1979 Starter Solenoid: 0389493
1975 Starter Solenoid: 0383622
Yet I have heard that even ford starters at autozone are fine for this motor..and these motors both mount the solenoids the same.

1979 Tilt Tube: 0321052
1975 Tilt Tube: 0317769
I have measured and looked to compare..unless the diameter is different I am not sure why this tube wouldn't work.
And would think the diameter of these would be pretty standard to fit the steering cables.

I will be running out of town today so may not be able to check email...will try though as I need to let guy know if I am a buyer or not by this evening.

Thank you all for your help.

Anyone know about the tilt tube, prop and starter solenoid at least?
If they all work I think I will buy it and sell off the other parts...if it's still available that is.

Thanks.
