75hp 85hp evinrudes same starters ?

Hi there ive been looking for a starter for my 68 85hp evinrude without much sucess but ive been offered a 75 hp starter does any one know if it is the same starter ps the starter on my 85hp is missing entirely so i cant compare them visualy thanks mick

Mick..... If you're speaking of the 3cyl 75hp OMC engine as compared to the OMC V/4 engine, the retaining bolt hole alignments are different. Bottom line is that they will not interchange.

The 68 75 hp And 68 85hp were both V4's and used a similar motor (two piece with seprate gear drive) They should interchange, just check that the cable stud comes out at the same angle. Also, they made a 2 brush and a 4 brush starter. The four brush starter has an alum' bottom cap, and the 2 brush is stamped steel. Get the 4 brush if you can. If the 75 HP starter offered you has a starter drive with a large gear and spring(a bendix) and has mounting tabs welded to the case it is off a 3 cylinder and will not work. <br />Interesting note, the starter off the early V4's also fits many early Harley Davidson bikes!!
