Shop price would be around $ 2000 .----That is without needing major parts like a crankshaft and rods.----Crankshaft alone would be $1000 +

I Have done a small 9.9 in my Small Engine repair course but had a machine shop do the cylinder. In my opinion it is more economical to buy a good crate motor with a bumper to bumper 1 year warranty than to pay someone to do a rebuild in my opinion, about $2500.00 to $3000.00 CDN for a rebuilt early model 75 HP 2 stroke. Usually other components need to replaced as well like racerone said. We have a great source for rebuilt marine engines where we are and we get a great deal from the guy, he includes delivery 125 miles away. Not less money but the smart move in the long run if someone is going to keep the boat. A 2000 O/B isn't really old, but it is almost 20 years old, lots can wear in 20 years good maintenance or not. This is a great reason to upgrade HP while you are at it. Think of the positives. Based on your questions I'm not 100% confident you can DIY this, I know I wouldn't even think about it without someone that can looking over my shoulder. You don't know something until you do. I suggest you take it in and have a pro look at it and give you a quote. I would expect to pay about an hour or a bit more for labour.

A warning!!!!! Make sure if anyone does buy a rebuilt engine, for anything, do a pressure test of each cylinder at least before going to all the time and labour BEFORE you install it. Even running it before install is best, especially an I/O. We have learned our lesson if you know what I mean.
