75hp mercury wont start

After the battery running out now the engine will not restart after putting in a new battery. This is the second time this has happened and im wondering what to do. It turns over and seems like it wants to start but just wont catch. What to check and do to get this 75hp mercury 1 year old outboard started again. Last time the rep came out and said that i had sand in the impeller or something. <br /><br />All comments appreciated.<br /><br />Bedros

The impeller will not keep it from starting.<br /><br />Are you advancing the throttle in neutral and using the choke?<br /><br />TMD

i dont see a choke its a new pontoon. Where would i look for a choke. Would it be inside the engine, because i dont not see one on the instrument panel. I do put it in neutral with the throttle all the way up and pump it also with no success.<br /><br />Bedros

When you turn the key to start the engine....push in on it and hold it..this will activate the choke or primer to assist in starting.<br /><br />TMD

If its only a year old it shouldnt have too much trouble starting. Did you check all the "oh, duh" stuff like any closed fuelcocks, make sure the tank is full, make sure the tank vent is open, make sure you pumped the priming bulb until hard, make sure the engine is in down position, etc? If choking and trying some throttle while starting doesn't help, my universal system for checking any engine (car, boat, lawnmower, weed wacker, whatever) is to pull a plug and check for spark. If it's got good spark (on all cylinders) try some starting fluid into the carb or directly into the cylinder while you've got the plugs out. If it then feels like it really wants to start or it actually starts for a few seconds and dies you most likely have a fuel delivery problem. Gas is cheap so dump the tank and inspect all the lines and fittings... If all that checks out focus on the carbs (although at 1 year old they shouldn't need service).
