1963 75hp Starflite. So I put my powerhead back together and I left off the water bypass cover because I'm going to paint it a different color than the block. Now I realize that I may not be able to screw in two of the bolts that hold the cover down because the upper crank head is in the way. If I could pull the head out a bit, I could get the cover bolts in, but I don't want to muck up the orings on the head. Any idea how I can get the bolts in? I can post pics if anybody wants them.

Here's a pic showing the two bolt holes and the crank head that is in the way. The shanks will fit into the hole, but the bolt heads rub on the crank head.

Did you put any oil or grease on the o-rings when you installed the carrier? If so you should be able to lift it without any damage.

Yeah, I put oil on them. I have a few extra as well, so even if they get torn I could replace them. I just want to be sure that nothing else except for the o-rings will get damaged if I pull up on the upper head. Is this the case?

...and will I need to loosen the crankcase-to-cylinder bolts or should I leave them alone?

For anybody else that may have this problem, the upper crank head did slide out easily without damage to the orings. I just rotated the crank head a bit as I pulled it out of the crankcase. Now I can replace the two bypass cover bolts then put the crank head back in. The crankcase main bolts did not need to be loosened.
