I have been searching this forum for some advice on certain issues, but figured I would finally join.

I have this 15 hp evinrude that i bought last year, ran perfect. I wineterized it this past winter. when i took it out this spring it ran good right away, then progressivley worse.

Last week I took the carb out, it was clean besides there was rust buildup behind the the float on the bowl. the needle was straight. I scraped that out and cleaned it. Put new plugs in and tested it out. took awhile to get it started, but once i did and after i adjusted the rich-lean knob, it ran perfect idled down just like it should. I took it out to the river, fired up in 2 pulls and ran perfect.

Well I took it out to a lake last night, fired up in 2-3 pulls but i had to pull the choke out and in, in order to keep it running, but i couldn't keep up with it so it died-and if i gave it more gas, it would bog out and die. I did this for about 5 minutes, then it would finally keep running.

Once i had it in gear I was going top speed for about 70 yds, then it would cut out, and I had to do the process over again. But after it cut out (it did this twice last night) and I got it running, it would idle down and keep running:confused:

I read in one repair page that the old cork floats can fail at times, would you recommend that I buy a new carb kit with the new plastic float?-whats in the carb kit- new gaskets, needle, float?

I'm assuming this problem is coming from my carb, i'm tempted in trying to find a whole new carb replacement for it so i dont have to richard around with it anymore!

fuel filter looked good, new gas tank, primer pump stays hard when its running.

thanks for any suggestions.;)

It does sound like it is flooding out. The OEM Evinrude kit has the float included; the Sierra kit does not. It might be time to replace the fuel hoses if they are original because ethanol seems to be eating up the old ones and clogging up carbs.

but really, whats in this Carb kit that will possibly make it not flood out besides a new float? the cork float looked fine and the carb was clean.

And when i was reading some tips about blowing out the carb with compressed air, i just hook that up to the gas line going into the carb with the carb upside down right?

if your carbs are flooding then the float or the niddle is bad or not alligned/set properly....

by blowing out the carb with compress air you remove everything that you can unscrew...soak and then you blow out jets and passages that might be clogged... look in the secret files how to properly rebuid the carbs....

good luck

take the carb apart to blow out other wise you just blow the junk into the float bowl ,etc.just did a 15 for a fella and the jets were totally plugged with crap!amazing that it ran atall!very simple and easy carb to do.you had a cork float?the last 3 rudes i did were all 1975/76 9.9/15 hp and all had plastic floats.

yeah its a cork float with a wax type finish over it. as for the jets, do i need to worry about taking those apart or just blowing them out? I read the top secret files, but to be honest i do not no what the jets look like:eek:

thanks again, yeah these carbs are easy to take out and mess with

those are reference pics. Large round and smaller are soft plugs. use these to replace after removing the old one and cleaning out the hidden passages. Only one should fit your carb.

Just use a sharp punch and hammer through the center, then twist them out. I use a socket extension and a hammer to put them in, concave side out.

so I'll be putting a hole through this plug, then using a pliers or something to grab inside the hole to twist it out?

thanks for the replies
