I have a 1976 evinrude 200hp. The trim will go up but not down unless i turned the bypass screw out. I talked to one guy and he thought it sounded like the motor wasnt working right. I just got done putting a new motor in and its doing the same thing. It sounds like its working fine but the motor wont go down. It sounds like there is air in the lines. I crack the lines loose at the piston and and run the motor fluid comes out. Is it possible that the piston is shot?
Thanks
Bill

does your boat use relays or solenoids? If so then try swapping the up and down (green and blue). If you problems reverses then it is a bad relay/solenoid. If your system does not use solenoids on the down circuit then try using jumper cables to hot wire the green motor lead to battery positive (just for testing). If that works then you have confirmed a switch a wiring problem as the source of trouble.

You have a single relay in the box under the back of the boat which controls the up on the trim. The down signal only goes thru the switch in the handle of the control box. You can wire around that switch and see if the down part of the switch is inoperative.
