Hi, I have been somewhat of a lurker on iboats just cant seem to get enough of it. Anyway I have a '76 35 hp Evinrude that had what the shop called a mid range miss and came up with, due to the thermostat either being stuck and or from '76 that it was not coming up to temp. and not burring off the fuel and fouling the plugs.... Well $250 bucks later for the thermostat it's now not pumping near the water it used to and is actually blowing more what I presume is steam than water out. I took it back they hooked it up to the hose ran it for awhile checked the temp with there little gun thing and said it was fine. I took it out after that and...... you guessed it more steam than water. Shut her down, now they say impeller. Any ideas? Thanks, Dean

Very well could be the water pump. Your dealer should know that you can't check operating temperature while running on a hose. I seriously doubt the original diagnosis too.

Does your motor have the original gearcase? We had trouble getting those '76 originals through the warranty period. Most of them burned up if you got it within 50 feet of a water weed.

Re: '76 35 Mid range miss

I have this engine and it always has a lot of hot water mist out the exhaust releif holes at the top of the leg. This is not steam as the water would have to be 212F or hotter. My water pump is new as I thought the hot mist was a problem. I think this model engine runs this way and if you can touch the thermosat area and not burn your skin then it's ok.

It would be a good thing to change/check the pump if this engine is new to you. Keep the thermosat as the engine will run the way it should as I have not change my plugs/points in three years and I do a lot of trolling.

Thanks you guy's. FR, I agree with you on the hose thing. In fact when i brought it home after the thermostat work i hooked it up to the hose and it pumped a fair amount of water but not like before so i put it in a tub of water and it pumped even less. Didnt make a bit of sence to me. Rockfinder2, the hot water mist as you call it, well it just seems to be more then one would excpet after say running wide open for as little 2 or 3 min. idle all the way down to check the flow and there is like this little cloud following me. I dont see alot of these motors around so i have nothing to compare it to but it just doesnt seem normal. I have an impeller on the way hopefully when i change that things will improve. Also this will be the first time for me changing an impeller so any advice you all have would be great. Thanks again. PS Have you guys ever been to ifish.net? Very much like iboats, check it out maybe we'll be chatting there soon.

Fr- I really have no idea if the gear box is the original, my guess would be yes. Rockfinder2- So if I read your reply correctly the two holes near the top of the leg are not for water only to be pumped out? Cause before I had the thermostat work done I had tons of water coming out of those two holes. Was that due to the thermostat being stuck open? Thanks again for all your help, Dean
