I recently got a 76 6hp johnson and I took it out for the first time and after about 6 or 7 mins going down a river at close to full throttle it died. I hit the primer ball and about a min later it died again. Then when I started it and went to give gas it bogged down and died right away. What would be the most likley cause?

" Hit the primer ball "---Means nothing to me !----How big was the hammer ?-----So when you squeezed the ball was it pumping fuel ?----How many squeezes to fill the carburetor ?----Did the bulb go hard?-----I would test run with another tank and hose.

is the vent open/working on the tank.... try with no fuel cap and see if things get better if yes.... venting issue to fix

overheating possibly. River sand will destroy an impeller -- did you replace it before trying out the motor?
