76 850 idle issue

I just rebuilt my carbs on my 1976 850 and it is idling at 1800 rpm when I put it in gear the motor runs great so my question is do I just need adjust the idle/air screw

If you just rebuilt your carbs and you've not adjusted anything on the trottle linkage like your idle set screws and such, then yeah. It's likely nothing more than a mixture issue at this point.

If that motor is idling at 1800 RPM and you put it in gear it will really bang, and trash your gearcase in short order. Is it really banging?

You need to run the link and synch on that motor. Does the distributor finger still touch the carb lever, when the throttle is in neutral? If so, it is likely at least the throttle cable is out of adjustment. Does the throttle go to the idle stop position, as set by the idle stop screw on the distributor? It should!
