OK, Senor Bottom Feeder, you'll eat those words when i'm catching fish with the CDFEBSM

Va, no hard feelings. i hardly thought you'd want the CDFEBSM in exchange for a new Honda, esp given yr screen name.....

What a nice find. I don't think you are under powered. My guess has your top speed at 30-32. I'm running the weakest of the weak OMC 120hp white leg of death and I can get 28 gps verified mph out of it. Your 90 Honda certainly has to be stronger and lighter.

Re: 76 Chieftain 22 Outboard barnfind

JD thanks for that info if I can get 28 tops I would be happy as most of the time it is so choppy I will only be running about 18-20 anyway.
I haven't run it yet but am guessing the prop is pitched too high. It has a 13 3/4 x 15 stainless 3 blade. I want to be sure and get up to 6000 rpm with an average load so the motor won't be lugging when I load it full of fuel and ice and passengers. I have a stainless powertech 4 blade offshore prop in 14" pitch may be the thing. Got some things pressing will be a little while before I can get it on the water.

Re: 76 Chieftain 22 Outboard barnfind

Well have not been on here lately but an update. I finally got the carbs rebuilt from sitting 7 years. Put the boat in yesterday and ran it a couple hours to see how it does and get some break-in time on the motor. Now has 6 hours on it. Wow to those of you that thought the Honda 90 was underpowered on this 22 Chieftain I am happy to say that you were wrong. It was just me and 12 gallons of gas and a toolbox but wow. Starts stepping up on plane at 2400 rpm with my 4 blade powertech prop and is nicely on plane at 3000 rpm no gps yet but guessing 18-20 mph and when I hit the throttle an ran it up to 4000 hang on. Gotta put more time on it before I open it up but even when I add say 1000 lbs of gas gear and fat I think this combo will do just fine for me. I believe after break in propped for 6000 rpm I will exceed my hoped for 35 mph. Will keep you guys posted on my progress.

Yes Bob wot is 5000-6000 rpm As I am still breaking it in I have only been to 4000 for a little bit mostly 500-3000 until i get past the 10 hour mark.

Hey bean that's a sweet Chief you got there. So what are your plans for the old gal now that the Honda is ripping her across the waves?

After I get finished with tax season replace some flooring and then new vinyl over that. Install bigger tanks and electronics. Probably a little painting topsides. I put a better trailer under her this fall. Tandem galavanized with torsion suspension. It had an electric winch and workingled lights for $400. But then i blew the wad on new hubs bearings and tires. But she rides sweet and no worries. As light as this boat is if I get a flat I am good to on one tire.

my bud Murphy will see that last line as goading.....;)

glad to hear that Honda shoves it so well. the more i work with Honda OBs, the more i love em compared to the old stuff. carbs are easy to clean, oil is easy to change, and then there's the 6000 redline possible with carefully balanced components and rods made of something other than cast pot metal. i keep hoping that someday my fairy godmother will put a similar 90 on CL for my holiner.....:flypig:
