76 Evinrude 15hp driver coil?

Hey guys I’m working on two motors if you see multiple posts. I pulled the flywheel today just to look at points, earlier I posted that I pulled the top spark plug wire and the motor died? Pulled the bottom it stayed running, What is the main purpose of the driver coil? And does this look normal? It looks like it has medical tape on it? Thx

Ok, I’ve never pulled flywheel on 76 Evinrude. Do these go bad very often?

I think you would not have spark on both if the driver coil was bad...

I.have never seen one go bad.
