I have a 1976 Evinrude 85 with a siezed lower unit, but a good powerhead.
I've found a 1982 Evinrude 90 with the opposite problem and power tilt to boot.

Could anyone help me determine if these are compatible? Could I take the powerhead from the '82 and replace it with the powerhead from the '72?

Any help would be appreciated.

OK, the lower units are not interchangable. The bolt pattern is different. The newer case is slightly longer.

You can put the 82 powerhead on the 76 midsection if you relocate 4 of the mounting bolt holes. Not a big deal if you send it to a shop that has the jig.

You can relocate the 4 bolt holes on the 76 to fit on the 82 mid section but it will leak water badly from the front of the block between the adaptor plate and block. That water can be injested into the powerhead.

The 82 may still be a good deal if the powerhead can be rebuilt.
