my motor was running fine one day and the next time i took it out the motor would run fine at low speed but when i tried to speed up it didnt go above 3200 RPM. i then found out that the two spark plugs on the right were not firing. Would this be the coils? or is it something else? thanks

Skier,

More than likely a powerpack, if you lost both.

Hi, Skier.

When you lose two cylinders on the same side it is often a bad powerpack. You can check this by switching the powerpacks.

Good luck. :)

Re: 76 evinrude 85 hp

Skier.... Unlikely that two coils would fail at the same time. The 1976 85hp has but one powerpack so if you actually lost spark on two cylinders on the same bank, it would most likely be due to a failed sensor on the timer base.

You can check the sensor by connecting the ohm meter leads between the two sensor wires controlling that bank. On low ohms scale, the reading should be 8.5 ohms +/- 2.0 ohms. With the ohm meter on high ohms, and one meter lead to ground, the other meter lead to either sensor wire, there should be no reading.

It could still be a powerpack problem but the above is the most likely.

Before doing anything else though, remove the spark plugs, turn the key on, then double check to see if that spark is really non existent. It should jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue flame. Let us know what you find.

Re: 76 evinrude 85 hp

can a sensor on the timer base be replaced or does the whole thing have to be replaced. Because i took it to my local marina and they told me $300 for the timer base and it would end up cosing me $490 after it was installed. thanks

Skier.... The timer base, unfortunately, would need to be replaced. I'll check my remaining stock and get back to you. Should I have one left in stock, I'll discount it.

SkierX1080,
i have the same engine. for aftermarket ignition replacement parts check out seilermarine.com they have fairly reasonable prices. iboats.com here won't really have minor replacement parts like this. the timer base at seiler's is $230 so it'll save a litttle bit. get a manual here and do it yourself and save a lot. good luck.

Skier.... If you find you need that timer base, I do have one new one left in stock which I'll discount to $215.00 and take care of shipping if you're in the states. If interested, contact me via ReevesJ32@aol.com

ZJ.... No problem on the post, we're all here to help out our fellowman.
