Hi...
New to me motor... I know nothing about the history of this motor... it will shift by hand, but needs more throw that possible with the remote control... I have gone through and tightened some of the slop the was in it... but other than that I'm lost.

S bends in the cable induce side to side slop that can't be adjusted out, its better to form loop than allow any S's.

You said it won't shift into forward, so can we assume it shifts into reverse?

One thing to check is to see that the shift cable is properly adjusted. With the cable off the shift linkage, gearcase in neutral and control box in neutral the cable end should be exactly centered with where it attaches to the shift linkage.

That's a good check.

Plus, cables do stretch. The engine end of the cable should not have any play (forward/back) on the black plastic end.

it shifts into reverse, with the remote... will also shift into forward by hand... it is like there is not enough throw in the system... I measured the max movement of the cable in the remote... and the amount of needed movement at the motor... looks like I need 1/2 inch more movement...

Not sure if you've messed with your cables or not, but I had this same problem recently when I moved my 115HP johnson from one boat to another.

Turns out I had the trunnion nut adjustment screwed up and when I corrected it my problem was gone.

Like metriccrescentwrench said, it would be a good place to start if you haven't done it already.

Here's the instructions I followed per Joe Reeves:

Re: ??? about 1974 115hp HYDRO-MECH shift
(Centering Shift Cable)
(J. Reeves)

When all is as it should be, the proper method to adjust the shift cable is to disconnect the cable from the engine. Move the shift linkage on the engine to find the center of the play in neutral, and when found, leave it centered.

Now, grab the end of the shift cable sleeve, push and pull it to find the center of the play there, and center that play.

Adjust the trunion on the threaded portion of the shift cable so that the centered play of the cable lines up with the centered play of the engine's shift linkage. Install and lock the shift cable with the retaining clamp in that position. That's it.

I had found the adjustment guideline a few days ago... and adjusted them, it shifted oky in the driveway with teh muffs on it... but it acts complely different in the water than is does with no resistance... The motor will operate in both gears... so I guess it's either stretched cables or misadjustment... I'll get new cables... and go at it again.

ohh man what an awesome day out on the water... I fixed the boat... YEah! was simple enough... I changed the control box with proper two lever control (got it used) and new cables... this gave the proper amount of adjustment needed to get her in gear and moving... great day on the water!
