Be cautious of the old invaders they were cheap construction and the hulls tended to split and crack lenghtwise!!! A local marina used to deal in them and dumped them.

Re: 76 Glastron v162 (07-26-2006 Update w PICS)

After about a month of off and on work on the boat I have some progress. The floor is gone. The glass is ground out as much as I could get to with the deck still attached....sooooo...I decided to separate the top from the hull. Removing the rubber insert and the rub rail was a breeze. Separating the two halves started out easy..until I got to the transom. The last person to "patch" this boat really didn't think that it would ever need to separated. 24oz woven roven and a ton of resin fused the splashwell to the transom. Two days of grinding, a floor jack, a hammer, a prybar and saw...I finally got it separated.

Last picture is of the underside of the deck...I am going to add another layer of glass to it...since it is starting to give.

To see more pictures (or larger versions of these) go to my shareaproject link in my signature.

Will, is the top of your boat being held in the air by bolts and expoy resin?

The stern has a 2x4 supporting it...on the bow...I have a rope tied between the 2 cleats and a rachet tie-down strap holding it up. This is a temparary setup..until I can bribe some friends to come over and help move it. I think I am going to remove the windshield an set it on the ground bottomside up (so I can re-glass the bow and cleanup the splashwell area)

Ha ha...did you look under the large slab of concrete for it? Or...Was the loud noise your wife un-hitching the trailer :)

After those pictures..I scrapped the rest of the foam off the back and bagged all the trash (foam and rotted wood). Tonight I am going to grind out the transom and bow area...and IF I can bribe my friends with beer (hint hint Eggkr8 )...I will flip the top off and grind that down too.

Re: 76 Glastron v162 (10-04-2006 Update w PICS)

Ok...its been awhile since I updated anything. Here is what has been happening.

I finished removing all the rotted wood from boat. I ground down the fiberglass and measured for a new transom. I started cutting some wood for the bilge and stern section of the stringers. I then cut and sandwiched together a new transom.

TransomClamps.JPG

While the transom was drying..I decided to flip the hull over and remove the bottom paint...hoping to find good gelcoat that only needed buffing...unfortunately I need to make some repairs (worn through and thin spots). I have decided to re-gelcoat the bottom. The repair kits cost around $30...and a gallon of gelcoat costs $50 at Mertons....no-brainer. I haven't decided if I am going to try to color match (boat is light cream) or just go with the white gelcoat and make a distinct color line.

I had a couple opps while grinding...but nothign that I can't fix with a little glass and resin...

I have started to re-organize my shareaproject with sub-topics to group stuff together better...please check it out.

Thanks.

Re: 76 Glastron v162 (07-26-2006 Update w PICS)

T.C.
Thanks for the words of support. I took all this week off from work so I am hoping the weather stays as nice as it was today (75-80 and sunny). I am almost finished with sanding the bottom...I have gelcoat...I want to get 2-3 coats on...sand and buff so I can flip the hull back over. Today I started patching the grind-thru spots. I am taking it slow...I applied resin...and mat..and more resin. I am going to apply 2 layers of cloth on top of the mat.

My transom sandwich sorta worked/failed. I sandwiched 3 pieces of plywood....one side pulled aprt easily..the other is solid. Since the mat was dry...I figure that I didn't use enough resin. I re-did it, using about a quart of resin and another piece of mat. I didn't clamp down as hard either. With the warm temps...it set up rather quickly and so far..it looks like it is going to hold.

This is my first re-build...I don't expect it to be perfect and I figure that I will waste $100-200 in materials due to mistakes an just plain over-kill. At this point...it is getting tedious (days of sanding) but when I get to do something new, it is a terrific feeling when it works out.

I should have some new pictures in a few days.

Re: 76 Glastron v162 (07-26-2006 Update w PICS)

nice project.. my neighbor at the lake bought what I think is that model of glastron 2 years ago. Handles very nice, and is quite zippy with a 85 merc. His is original (yes orange inside), but probably needs the same overhaul you're giving yours. I know the floor is bad in his, because I saw the seats get loose and topple over when they were using it one weekend... he had to use a lawn chair as the driver's seat for a while. He didn't redo the floor, just put new screws in to hold the sleeper back in there.

A couple weeks later he had it tied up to the dock for the weekend... they were tubing with it etc, but it seemed kinda sluggish. I figured maybe they'd done something bad to the motor (no oil in gas??). Next day a guest of his goes to switch gas tanks, and says... "Uhhhm there's lots of water in here" when he looks behind the curtain. They eventually figured out that they had launched the boat and used it all weekend without ever putting the plug in it.... It would float just high enough to keep the water under the floor. (hmmmm, wonder why it was going soft??) How many other boats could you leave the plug out, and not sink it?? That's a good boat design!! Of course a few hundred pounds of water under the floor made it bit slow out of the hole.

As you can tell, he's a complete newbie to boats. He lucked into a very nice older boat/motor combo that seemed to be in very good shape... but I doubt it will survive another year or two. I'm surprised he hasn't toasted the motor yet. Against my advice, he's been running it on a bent prop for most of the summer. Oh well...

Also, my dad has a very similar glastron to yours, but older and one size bigger (17'4"?)... it has a 120 hp mercruiser I/O... It handles chop nicely, but I think the outboard version would probably be a better overall boat. His is pretty doggish. Feels heavy and underpowered.

They're very nice hulls. What hp is it rated for? 65 might be border line if you intend to use it for skiing. Would probably be fine for cruising/fishing. My neighbor's 85 seems a good fit.

Anyway, good luck to you...

BF - the boat is rated 50-100 hp. I was looking at a 115 to put on it but it wasn't in any kind of shape that I was interested in. I figure, I will put my 65 on it and see how it goes. If it doesn't have the power I want, then I will look at upgrading.

Updates:

I FINALLY finished sanding the bottom paint off. I then scrubbed it with Comet and an abrasive sponge (actually wore throught the abrasive part). D@mn it feels good. Here is a shot of her...

From the side...

100_1888s.jpg

Taped off the first section to be gelcoated but the weather turned crappy so I wans't able to get the first layer on.

100_1891s.jpg

Here is a some more of my resin work...fixing some of my grinding oops. I still need to put one more coat of waxed resin (I have 2 layers of mat and one layer of cloth already down).

Fix1.jpg

Fix2.jpg

I have put on a second top on the canopy, added some PVC pipes for "snow support" and installed the walls so hopefully I will be able to continue into the fall. I may invest in a propane heater. I REALLY want to have this done by the spring.

Re: 76 Glastron v162 (11-19-2006 Update w PICS)

Progress is slow due to the weather. It is the middle of November in New England so nice days are pretty limited.

I rolled a coat of no-wax on the area taped off above and it came out...OK. I ended up wet-sanding it down a bit and Marine Texing a few of the bigger scrapes and gouges. I decided to try spraying it on (as suggested on another thread). I bought a $44 spray gun from Lowes and picked up some coloring agents from West Marine. I originally only got Brown...when I tried to match my boat's color...I noticed I needed some yellow. I came close to matching the color. The new gelcoat is alittle lighter than the original. I am going to wait for it to dry/cure a bit then mix the next batch...I think I just need a dab more brown and I will be all set. The first coat is no-wax...I was planning on doing a second coat of waxed the next day but the temps dropped too much. As it was, I had a propane heater, electric heater, halogen heat lamps and a hand held heat gun to try to get the temp in the enclosure and the temp of the surface up.

Here are the pictures so far. It was getting dark so they didn't come out as nice as I would have liked.

So far, so good. I am hoping to get the waxed coat on this week.
