I need help putting the lower unit back together, My dad and I recently replaced the water pump on it and are trying to put the motor back together (It has a 77 plate on it, and has a 76 lower on it, 115hp Johnson). We can't get it back in because we think its catching on 2 copper tubes that go up into the upper part of the motor. We believe they are called "slide tubes" but not sure, and want to know how to align them into the water pump housing...
Any help would be GREAT!

The two copper water tubes should have sleeves (guides) on them that you can pull down to the water pump to help insert them.

As you raise the lower unt, the guides will slide up the water tubes and out of the way so that the copper tubes are correctly seated in the water pump.

Marine grease on the inserts, guides and water tubes will help.

There are some plastic sleeves on the copper tube up about a 1in or so, is that what your referring to?

if your lighting is good you wont need a flashlight.....what i do is get the lu all but on and look inside the small gap and take a long slim screw driver and align the pickup tube with the wp tube. without these 2 tube together your wp doesnt work correctly.

To Hearse: That's correct. Push them directly into the holes in the Cover and Seal Asssembly screwed to the top of the water pump housing.

Use the gearcase and exhaust housing diagrams for your motor model if we need to discuss the parts: http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e

Got it figured out, we were trying to pull the copper tubes instead of the sleeve  but we got it once I posted here, thanks for the response, gotta put the rest of the motor back together tomorrow! (Carbs and linkages, all the fun stuff)

Thanks again!
