76 Johnson 115 project question

I am starting reassembly on my project now. I did not pull the prop shaft but I replaced the seals and gaskets on the upper side of the gearcase. New upgraded water pump and all of that stuff. Getting the gearcase back together with the exhaust housing was not an easy thing. The water tubes lining up was not as easy as I would have liked.

I have a couple of questions for this post .

When I took the unit down, I pulled a piece of plastic off of the very bottom of the lower engine cover just beneath the carbs. It looks like it started life with some other stuff on it. Is this by chance an air filter of some sort? And if so, is there a replacement available? I haven't had much luck finding it online, but haven't tried my local Johnson dealer either.

And does anyone suggest a synthetic gear oil for the gearcase, or just stick to the original stuff?

As always, thanks for the good info and response in advance.

The lower cowl air intake is just below the lower carb. That opening has a plastic cover (baffle) that screws in over the opening. It is part number 386254. If that is the part you need, it was discontinued years ago. While not a critical part for running the engine, it may help keep some water from splashing up into the cowl and will make the engine quieter. Your engine has no air filter. I would run Bombardier XPFR lower unit oil.
