I have a 76 johnson 200 that I am having trouble with the tilt trim. I am only getting power to the down position on the switch I went to change out the switch and found when I connect the power to the down wire the motor runs but it doesnt do anything, I connect the power wire to the up wire and nothing happends at all the motor doesnt run or anything. I filled the fluid level and checked the fuses. I believe its a two wire motor. any help would be appreciated thank you.

Re: 76 johnson 200 tilt trim help

Your factory power trim assembly was one of the very early trim systems. The motor was originally a 3-wire system. This older trim system uses a special control box which mounted separately under the splashwell of the boat. There was a single solenoid, fuse and two heavy cables which were wired direct to the battery-just like the engine. The down motion was wired direct through the trim switch on the control box handle. Since the up motion consumes so much current and will quickly burn up the handle trim switch, it is wired through the solenoid in that box, then through the trim switch. The inside cover of that box has a wiring diagram glued inside for reference. To test the motor, ground the black wire. If you touch the blue wire to the pos of the battery, the motor should go up. If you touch the green wire to the pos of the battery, the motor should go down. If for some reason you have a two wire motor, someone has updated the motor with one from a newer engine (mid year 1981 and later.) That model uses a control box which mounts on the back of the exhaust cover-yours will not have the mounting brackets for the box.

Pics of the trim may help to troubleshoot and know if it is the original or someones update it...post some.

Myself updated my 1980 115 Johnny trimless motor with a fast trac....

Re: 76 johnson 200 tilt trim help

thank you guys for the replies. I think the motor is a 3 wire because I dont think it has been replaced from the original motor. is the splashwell toward the back of the boat because I do have the solenoid and the box with the diagram in the back of the boat. at the switch I have 3 wires a power then the up wire and the down wire I put the power to the up wire and it didnt do anything what would you look for first? I dont have a control box on the back of the exhaust cover either. the motor will run in both directions at the solenoid but it just isnt getting power to the wire at the switch. thank you
