76 Johnson 25 hp Problem

I recently purchased a 76 Johnson 25 Hp model 25EL76E. Electric start.

I ran the motor several times ran great. On the fourth trip out I could barely
get 1/5 speed. Checked the linkage OK. I have checked the linkage,prop,sheer
pin repeatedly,plugs.


Here is the situation. If I run in a barrel in neutral manually moving the
throttling it wants to take off !! When out on the water in forward 1/5 speed
at best. Checked the sheer pin and prop OK. The engine is not roaring like
in neutral. I had the cover off to see that the throttle control was fully forward. No roar runs very slow ?


Doesn't make any sense to me. Any help would be appreciated.

revs up on hose , won't rev in the water usually says carb rebuild.
Assuming you opened the tank vent right?

Whats the condition of the fuel tank , old?
fuel lines and bulb...old or unknown ?
replace all lines and bulb, clean tank and rebuild carbs with rebuild kits.

yes it is for his motor. and i agree 100%. also change the impeller, before you run hot. read THE TOP SECRET FILE, top of this forum.

Answers: Fuel Tank old, fuel lines and bulb age unknown but not new.

Dumb Question: Tank Vent : How secure should tank vent be to be opened ?

Novice on this end previously only ran self contained on smaller motors.
