'76 Johnson 6HP (6R76A) spark issue

Well apparently I need a more heavy duty strap wrench, I can't even get the flywheel nut to torque to 20 pounds using the cheap plastic wrench. I was able to remove the nut with just having someone hold the flywheel, so there's no way it was properly torqued before.

Wrap a rope counterclockwise around the flywheel, using the groove for emergency starting. Use that to hold the flywheel.

The throttle control cam has two small lines/notches on the top near the idle position, what purpose do they serve? Is this the "start" position marking?

Motor runs fantastic now that I'm using both cylinders.

not sure. If that's the cam under the roller (attached to timing/ignition plate), I would guess the roller should touch between the marks when you do the link and sync. (?)

See pic below. They are on the top edge of the cam throttle, I dont see anything that looks like it would mate against the notches.

Believe on your motor, the roller should first touch the cam between those marks as you advance the throttle. The cam will push the throttle plate fully open as the roller advances to the high point of the cam.

Okay that makes sense, it's the set point where the cam will first start to engage the carb throttle butterfly if I understand it correctly.

Yes. Roller hangs out there until your begin to throttle up. Prior to that the engine should run at a low, slow idle (couple of holes in the closed throttle plate/valve) -- depends on settings [idle stop screw and mix adjustment in a clean carb].

I noticed that I'm missing the water intake screen from the lower unit, is it harmful to run motor without this screen?

The round screen is available (about a $10 part). Better to run with it installed.

Yes I have already ordered one but just wondering if it's safe to run while I wait for delivery........almost looks like I could craft my own temporary screen as an interim fix...

Depends a lot on where you are running.
Weeds and other debris can impede water flow a lot if sucked into the intake.
