OK Boys, I've got questions...

What should I do about the live well?

Should I cut it out, do the deck, and then glass it back in afterwards?

Or should I just clean out underneath what I can, slide the new ply (resin sealed) under it, and glass it like that?

What do y'all think?

I think you'll have problems trying to get the plywood under those areas. If you need the floor to help support them, then they need to come out, if they are glassed into the boat and hold their own as is, you might just tab the floor onto them.

I'd think they'd come out with the cap...

The livewell is currently glassed into the side of the hull. Here's a better picture of it, taken while I was ripping out the deck.

I'm thinking that it's not part of the cap at all, but the old deck was part of the foundation for it. So the livewell supports itself sort of...

I think once I get the stringers out I'll really be able to get all the rotted wood out from underneath it. Is there any reason I couldn't just slide the new deck in under it and tab it in place??? (Kinda like Fury said...)

I think it's only going to be hampered if the livewell can't be flexed upwards so that you can get enough clearance.

There's only one problem I foresee and that is the fact that there will be no way for you to secure/seal the edge of the deck against the hull if you do that.

If they aren't all that hard to remove,and you can envision the way they'd go back in.... I think I'd remove them and re-glass them back into place when the deck is finished.

Looks like things are progressing nicely! Fun aint it! eek Tell your wife she is the hottest woman in the world. And I mean that in the most respectful way possible. By her some flowers or a power tool or something. Good job!
BTW-whoever put those walk boards around your trailer was using their noggin'. Those things will come handy. nothing beats walking from the boat to the truck and never getting your feet wet.

And those walk boards are nice! The trailer is a project in itself. It's been sitting with the boat since '84. Needles to say, its got its own issues but it still pulls like a champ

Alright Boys,

it's been a few weeks since I gave an update, so here goes...

We haven't physically made much progress, but what we have done is get a plan together to pull the cap. I'm hauling it back down to my grandparents place this weekend so we can pull the motor and the cap. We're doing it there because they've got a barn and that way the cap/motor will be out of the elements... Also, it'll be much better to paint the cap down there while it's covered.

After this weekend I'll bring the hull back with me so I can do the stringers/deck/transom. Then I'll flip the hull and fix the dings in the keels from all those year of beaching it. Once that's all done (sometime in the spring), I'll haul the hull back down to be rejoined with the cap.

Sounds like a plan right? haha...

I'll have some fresh pictures for you after Labor Day.

Good to hear from you again!!! I followed your thread due to how similar our boats are. Right now we have the cap sitting on a roll around frame and the hull BARE with the exception of the new transom. We are out of money, sort of. So we are doing everything we can with what we have, shaping the deck boards, shaping and glassing the stringer, designing bilge and motor mount. We will flip the hull maybe this weekend so we can start prepping it for paint, (once its prepped we will sit until more money comes in haha)

When you get your cap off and rip the rest of that deck out your gunna feel awesome. Make sure you check your hull for cracks or holes. once we got the hull ground down and bare we found a few discolored spots in the woven glass of the hull. Sure as **** the discoloration was a point of water entry and found cracks in the hull. We are repairing those now also.

I think I'm going to run into the same thing. I need to get some pics up of the center keel. it's pretty tore up from years of being beached... I can see bare fiber, and you know that's no good. So, we'll just add that to the list of things that need some attention. Ha...

So far we did one hole oops's way and the other we are going to just fill and lay glass on the inside, The first one looks great, second one we havent started yet. I am going to get a keel guard before we finish her up. Today we ripped the rotten wood off the bottom portion of the cap. That sucked a lot. Hope to see more pics soon.

OK, so I promised an update shortly after Labor Day, and looks like I'm a little late on that. Sorry...

Anyway, we've made some headway. We did get the cap pulled, and there's nothing like a family reunion to get more able bodies to help!

So here goes...
We separated the cap, which wasn't a big deal except for having the cut through the cap where the splash well connects to the transom.

Next we slid 3 2x4's underneath the cap, had someone on each of the exposed ends, they lifted, and we pulled the hull out from underneath it. Too easy right?

Then all we had to do was set saw-horses up and set the cap down.

Ah...

I forgot to mention that before pulling the cap we pulled the engine first. Kinda obvious, I know but still worth mentioning. Basically we hooked a chain hoist up over the rafters of the barn, and wrangled it free. We left it hanging there with the cap, and I'll tend to it after I get the new deck put it.

So after the cap was pulled, we decided it was time to get the trailer whipped back into shape. We hit it with a barrage of wire-wheels to knock all the old rust off.

So...

Today was the first time I've been able to get back to the boat since Labor Day. I've had a lot on my plate lately. With work, National Guard, and going to school full time there hasn't been a lot of extra time to go around...

Today we lifted the hull up off the trailer. I hooked up a come-along to the bow eye and another up to the rear. We cranked 'em enough to get free of the trailer and rolled it out from underneath it.

After the hull was off the trailer we got the sandpaper back out did a little more work on the rust. I didn't get any pictures, but we got half of it primed and will get the other half done this week. After that it's two coats of bright white to make that trailer look like new again.

That's all I've got for now. Again, sorry for such a long break, hopefully it won't take so long for the next set of updates.

I said in the very beginning that this boat is our family's boat, and it really is. The cool part has been how everyone has pitched in to help where they can. It really makes it that much more special...
