Square thing is the pulse transformer, the wire going under the flywheel is the low tension lead going to the charging coil/trigger assembly.

so I don't have the dreaded solid state magnito that everybody says are almost imposible to find? I have a "repairable Ignition" if it is bad?:)

Nope. It means you do have the solid state ignition. I'm sorry. Time to start looking for another outboard, I'm afraid...unless you have more time and money than I do.

Pull the plug and securely ground it to the head and crank it over.It should have a nice blue spark with a snap.

It's very important that the plug be grounded well to the head before you crank the engine over. If not, the surge can burn out the electronics module. Same thing with the wire connecting from under the coil to the transformer. If it's not connected to the transformer, again, the module can be destroyed when you crank the engine. Those two things are the most common reasons those solid state ignitions fail on those engines.

There was nothing really wrong with those solid-state ignitions, other than that weakness, and the fact that nobody thought anyone would still be using those outboards 30 years later.

One thing I'm checking on for my 2-cylinder 9.9 is whether I can buy one that is pre-electronic ignition and swap over the flywheel and all the ignition parts onto mine. If so, then I'll be able to get mine going. If not, mine's off to the junkyard. I'm watching for an earlier model to come on the market here in my area.
