Motor keeps bogging down and killing when I try to accelerate. Runs great when it’s wide open; usually idol’s ok, but when I try to accelerate 2 out of 3 times it will kill. It’s like it doesn’t get enough gas running through it in mid range?-? Mechanics have tried re-jetting iteven they are stumped. Any thoughts?

This happened to my 1975 70 hp. It was bad gas that caused mine carbs need to be cleaned out, particularly the jets on all three carbs. You wouldn't happen to need a spare lower unit, would ya ??????

bowhuntr

Research this site and you will find a bunch of people with those 3 cyl 70hp motors that have the same problem. I call it "WOMS"

(Wore Out Motor Syndrome)

If I new the answer, I could make alot of money. I think the engines are starving for gas. Apply the choke and see if that helps.

jon,

No way around it, You need to clean/rebuild the carburetors and perform a synch/link.

You'll need a manual. Try this site (iboats-lower left of page) or the library.

Been there, had the same issue, done that.

Re: 77' 70 hp evinrude problems

I had similar problems with a pair of 1978 70HP engines which I bought on a used boat. After I
cleaned the carburetors (rebuilt them) they run
fine. There are two fixed jets on each carb, one
for idle and one for full throttle. I had found that they were partially plugged with debris so
I installed all new jets (six per engine). I also
installed a fuel filter in the gas line and when ever thet are going to sit for a few weeks as the end of the season I run the engines dry to keep the carburetors from gumming up again.
