I inherited a boat and motor (1977 75HP Evinrude) some time ago. It has always seemed to underperform (5100 RPM WOT with just driver, 4800 with loaded boat) but recently has added a new troublesome symptom. Under load it will occasionally (more frequently or continuously in damp weather) and suddenly lose power (drop to a fast but smooth idle RPM) and then (a few seconds later or even less) just as suddenly come back. The sudden on-off seems more ignition than fuel. A friend insists that I have one or more coils breaking down under load and should change all three.

Before I start changing ignition parts at random, would appreciate any opinions. Is there any way for me to test this or is it time to take the boat and my wallet to the shop?

BTW, could a weak spark be the cause of the poor top end performance? I will change the plugs next time (they have not been changed since this started to happen but were quite new).

Thanks
