I have a 1977 Evinrude 70 that is hard to start when cold, or been sitting for a while. Starting with warmup lever up, choke, it coughs. I then have to crank & crank until eventually it catches, starter drops, out go again and it starts wtih a lot of smoke - like when you flood a car! Once started an it is warm it starts without a problem. It also runs well. Could this be float level, needle & seat or mixture or what?
Thanks

Please describe your start up process in detail some of these motors need to start a certain way for best results.

Hi Javelin 353,
This motor is new to me, I have followed the previous guy's advice - prime the bulb, fully lift the warmup lever choke (by pressing key in) and start. Sometimes it has an initial cough. Then I have to give it short (5 second) cranks until it starts to cough, nearly fires and starter disengages. THis happens about five or six times until it fires, it then just runs like when a car starts from being flooded just running and then runs nornamlly- a couple of seconds and it runs fine. On one occassion, after a few cranks of it coughing and not firing, I opened the throttle (doesn't apprear to have a neutral switch) part way and it fired! Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Rude70, I have one of those beasts also, they can be a problem to start, your really need to check where the carb start to pick up when you raise the warm up lever, too far will flood the motor, the carbs should be just starting to open (the mark should just touch the pickup on the linkage, and you should make sure your initial timing is correct. If the timing is off, its a beast to start

jim_in_day,
Thanks for your advice. I got a manaual from the local library (Lucky!!), had an initial check of the cam follower alignment, it is way out - did not touch the lower mark and aligned near the upper mark - thus warmup lever had the cam follower way above start position!. Idle speed screw was all the way in, have now adjusted throttle cable and cam follower to align with lower mark and will check pick up timing should be TDC for this model according to book. Will also check full throttle timing 17 degrees btc - have read an article by Joe Reeves (OMC tech 30yrs+) how to check full throttle timing without starting engine! Will let you know the outcome
