I have a 77' Evinrude 75hp that will not turn over. It does nothing when I turn the key, and just would like some advice on where to start with troubleshooting. It has a new battery that has more cranking amps, could that of caused the starter to go? I did not think so. I did get shocked when I put the battery lead on, if that is any help. It has been running great up to this point. All suggestions are very much appreciated, I can't go long without my boat.

The battery does not "force" amps into the starter. The starter "demands or draws" amps from the battery so you can't over power it unless the engine is seized. Start by jumping the solenoid. Use a jumper cable to momentarily connect the two large posts on the solenoid. If the engine now turns over the ignition switch, wiring, or the solenoid is bad. If it still doesn't turn over connect a jumper cable to the POSITIVE post on the battery and then to the large terminal on the starter. If it now turns you have a cable problem. Remove, clean, inspect (both ends) as required. If it still doesn't spin, attach a second jumper cable to the NEGATIVE batter post and to a good ground on the engine and repeat the previous test. If the starter still doesn't spin, its toast. Your local auto/electric shop (alternator/starter rebuilder) can rebuild it much cheaper than a new starter.

Thanks for the info, I run the tests tonight and see what I can come up with. How much is it typically to rebuild the starter?

Go to Engine FAQs, Jer. "Outboard wont start" should give you more info.

Yeah, I've been looking around in there for pertinent info.
