77 Evinrude Shift Rod Question

Hi everyone, first post here I searched for an answer but couldn't find, perhaps one of the gurus can help out. I have a 77 Evinrude 140HP which I am changing the gearbox on. Unfortunately this particular year has the different shift rod setup (with the threaded link end on the engine side). I have another top condition gearbox from a 79 140, fits perfectly but it has the different linkage, the more common one with the angle on the engine side. Question is can I rig this shift rod up to work with my 77 engine? I do have the link arm out of the 79, but can't find where to set it up on the engine. Has anyone done this before? I also thought of cutting the rod and tapping a thread into it so I can put the old link on the rod if all else fails. I can't see why it shouldn't work.

You'd have to put ALL the linkage from the '79 to work on the '77. On the '77 the shift rod is pushed down for for forward gr. On the '79 it's pulled up. Maybe somebody else on this forum has done it and will chime in. Good Luck.

Thank you, it's interesting that it's the opposite of push/pull. I actually have the control module and cables for the 79, I'm not sure what all of the linkages would encompass though. If I cut and replace just the linkage can I simply reverse the cables from the control box to make forward/reverse not work in the opposite manner?

Re: 77 Evinrude Shift Rod Question

You may be able to get the 79 lower to work on your 77 if you change the intake manifold and shifting linkages to a 1979 setup. You should be able to identify the parts from the factory parts list on the web: epc.brp.com

I have the parts. Yes the manifold needs to be swapped for the new linkage setup, I think I have everything I need to do it. I can confirm that forward is pull on the lever both on my 77 and the new setup so I don't need to change the control box! Cable ends are the same so it should work perfectly. Just waiting on a seal and pump kit now before I do the whole job.
