Check the tank vent by cracking open the filler cap,to allow air in the tank.<br />Evinrudes of that vintage had problems with coils, but the engine would've started to miss real bad, if this was the case.<br /><br />Look for a loose or corroded connection around the switchbox,stator and trigger. If in doubt,clean it shiny. It could be an intermittant contact.
