Hey I am new to the forum and new to boats and I need help! I have done lots with cars but I just picked up a 76 invaider with a 77 johnson 115 outboard 2 weeks ago. The boat needed work but I got it all fixed up in a weekend and the motor worked great. I have already taken in out 3 times and the only engine problem I have had was it dies at idle when I first get going but it stops after its run for awhile. I just assumed it was normal for an old motor. I was out on the lake today and cruising along pretty slow because it was rough out and it just died. I tried to start it and the starter engages but won't turn the crank. I tried manual and it wouldn't budge. I got towed back and pulled the plugs and got it cranking and eventually got it to run but it seemed like it was having a hard time turning the crank and getting started. I put it back in the water and idled it high for awhile then it would just die and I killed the battery pulled it out and just called it quits. I don't know alot about boat motors so any advice would help. I am going to try compression test and leak down tomorrow.

Most of this series of motors were sold with unregulated rectifiers that will maintain a fully charged battery but will not keep the battery charged if accessories overwhelm the rectifier.

The motor has to turn a minimum cranking speed of 250 RPM to fire the ignition. That requires a fully charged, powerful battery, immaculate connections and solid battery cables.

Because of the crossflow's porting, a leak down test is a delicate balancing act to be sure. The compression test is simple and will usually give you adequate indication of problems.

So its not electronic issues I just killed the battery trying to get it to turn over. I replaced the starter solinoid just because the mount was bad and charged the battery. Turned it over a few times with my breaker bar till it was smooth and she purred. Put it on the lake today made a bunch of runs on the wake board then bam at full throttle it did the same thing it did last time. This time it just started right up but the gears are done. So I fried by bottom end. What should I do now rebuild it or look for a used motor?

Rebuilt lower units are expensive, but there are a lot of used ones around with plenty of life left in them. Try the salvage yards or maybe one of the forum members will have one.

The units that will work on the standard length 1977 115 are from 85HP and 115HP from 1977 and from 85, 115, and 135HP from 1973 through 1976. The back edge of the skeg will be perpendicular to the propeller shaft.

You can keep a search on Ebay for any item and they will send an email when one comes up. You can also post a "wanted" ad on Ebay.

In the meantime, call the salvage yards. Here is a partial list for you to research. The good ones will give you a limited warranty.

BTW, those units are hydraulic assist and they won't work correctly if they are not filled with high viscosity 75-90 gear oil.

Sweet man thats what I needed to know! I have been searching ebay but wasn't sure which models and years I could go with. Yah I know I had a leak in the old bottom end because I had to fill it up when I got it then another 8 oz after a week. Thanks!

I am trying to drop the bottom end right now. I drained the fluid and it was straight grey with lots of metal shards so its for sure my gears on the bottom end. I took the 5 bolts out and it dropped almost an inch. Do I need to do something special to get the shafts out or so I just need to pry on it?

make sure that the shift shaft is disconnected (unless you have electromatic shifting)

It's a bellcrank under the carburetors. Reach the screw that forms the fulcum from the starboard side and loosen that screw. Then spread the fingers of the bellcrank so that it releases the pin holding the shift rod. It's easier to reach the scre if you disconnect the control cables at the engine.
