My parts catalogue(an OMC which lists parts and breakdowns for the 85, 115 and 140 hp motors)lists two stator assemblies. Part # 581225 (6 amp) and Part # 581680 (12 amp). A footnote at the bottom of the page indicates that the 12 amp stator is for 140 HP TNT models only. I ordered the 12 amp stator from CDI. My model number according to the tag on the transom bracket is 140ML77, however I have tilt and trim. Do you think I ordered the correct stator for this motor? The stator I received from CDI looks different than the one I have(had) on the boat (the one on the boat has the wires/coils (not sure what you call the windings)covered in a greenish plastic coating which makes the windings almost invisible, whereas the CDI windings are practically exposed (I can easily see the individual wound coils).

That's the part number I ordered and received. My concern is: the difference in appearance from my old one and the footnote reference indicating that the 12 amp is for the 140 HP TNT models only. I was wondering since my model tag indicates that it is a manual tilt (ML), the TNT was added later. Would this still qualify as a 140 HP TNT models only? Also, I noticed in the catalogue that the rectifier has two listings also (one is for the the 140 HP TNT models only). I replaced the rectifier last summer with one offered through NAPA (the listing indicated it was for a '77 140 HP) a separate listing was not made for one with TNT. What effect would this have on the motor? I'm currently having a no fire situation and was wondering if this may have something to do with it

If you ordered the part for the tnt then you could need many other parts as well where did you order from and what was the cost in 77 6 or 12 amp same componants the tnt considered 78 different comp

Re: '77 Johnson 140 hp stator

Hey dolluper, I'm sorry for the confusion. I bought the boat about 14 years ago in it's present configuration. After finding out about this site a while back I learned that obviously my motor had been rebuilt before I bought it because the boats a '79 and the motors' a '77 mounting bracket with '77 powerhead, etc... Anyway it's run fine prior to this summer, I was having a hard time starting and finally a no fire whatsoever problem. I noticed a broken wire on the rectifier and a melting stator so I replaced both and installed. After repeated efforts to start and intermittent fire, it finally started and ran OK for several weeks. Now I'm experiencing the no fire situation again and the reason for my questions above. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Do an ohem check on your electrical's but from hearing that check the sensor coils first ,that they are not grounded

Call me stupid but I wouldn't have a clue on how to do either of what you mentioned. I have in my possesion a digital multimeter 0hm/volt tester with the dials and red and black leads but don't for the life of me know how to use it. Probably a great present for someone that knows how to use it.

YOU have a manual so turn the switch to ohems red is positive and black is negative ,the book will guide you through checking your components eg stator to see more on sensor coils [trick] drop down the posts to No Spark 1973 85 Johnson '"name garepr"read this post and let us know later how you make out

Question about the post garepr you referred to. I've replaced the ignition switch already. Looking at RJohnson's post, I need to check the sensor output voltage first before attempting to adjust the sensors. Can I do this with the volt/ohl multitester that I have? If you think I can, then how is done, i.e. where do I connect the red and black wires and what setting should the meter be set on? As I said before, I'm at a loss with a multitester but I consider myself a quick learner if given good instructions.

sensor coil take ohem meter set on low ohem scale take wire leads 2 and 4 off your power pack ,then the black lead and red between them ,the reading on the meter should be 8.5 + or - 2.0 then take 1 and 3 off the power pack and between them same test ,now set ohem meter to high scale take lead 2 with red meter lead...and black meter lead to ground on engine meter should read indifinate then the same with lead 4 + 1+ 3 also indifinate reading, should you get a 0[zero ] reading sensor is bad or broken wire on one test thats o
