Re: '77 Luhrs 28 ft. diesel repower - just beginning

Hi guys! Yes I'm still checking in here almost every day. Thanks for the compliments on my boat. I'm very happy with how it turned out. About my only wish is for more HP to get a couple more knots on the top end, so I'm currently checking into swapping in a GM 6.5 Turbodiesel over the winter.

The 6.2 diesel has proved to be an excellent boat engine but the power is probably better matched to a 21-24 footer.

Good luck with your projects and yes I will be following them.

Hey Luhrs 28, can u tell me where you aquired the fiberglass plate that you mounted your thru-hulls with.PLEASE, and thanks for a captivating thread.

Hi Springer: I bought my fiberglass sheet from McMaster-Carr supply, their part #8537K46. (go to www.Mcmaster.com) I bought a 1/2" X 24" X 24" sheet but they have lots of other sizes also. Actually the 1/2" thickness was probably overkill 'cause this stuff is insanely strong. I think 3/8" is plenty thick enough since it's really just a backer plate to reinforce the mounting.

By the way my boat is docked in South Amboy, NJ so I'm currently prepping it for the Hurricane. I hope it survives!

The 6.5L turbo diesel may not be up to the task either. The slight increase in power will be lost in the crappy injection pump (electronic) and also the block webb cracking. Have seen quite a few trucks with cracked blocks on the main bearing webbs.

Keep the 6.2L. That was an awsome project!!!!!!!!!!

How you going to cool that ^^^^ ????

Serious issue. Marine turbos are water jacketed on any hot side passages including the turbine housing ;)

Thanks for the continued interest in my boat. Yes I've been looking at the Banks Sidewinder kit for the 6.2 and might go that way. It seems like the part I'd have to custom-make is the exhaust, because the truck manifolds just won't work in a V-drive boat.

I've even looked at some other diesel engines (Detroits, Cummins, Cat, etc.), but they're all twice as heavy as the 6.2. One of the things I like about the 6.2 is it's only maybe 100 lbs. heavier than a Chevy 350 gasser.

How about scrapping the whole diesel idea and go with a turbine powered v drive!!!!!!!

why not just supercharge it? you can always re-gear a centrifugal one for a diesel.

I don't know anything about Supercharging, but I think the timing belt drive would take a lot of engineering. I don't know much about turbos either but it seems like there are more off-the-shelf parts available for it.

I'm also lazy so I might not do either!

As always thanks for the input.

I agree about not going with the 6.5, they were plagued with issues, you do not want to be breaking down every day on the water. Stick with simple. I go Cummins if it would fit, pretty tall engine though.

Luhrs the supercharger wold be easer from the pointe the you dont have to pull the engine or redo the exhaust
just a belt drive to the charger the kits would probally cost about the same
superchargers are usally belt driven where the turbo is exhaust driven not must difference other than that they just provide boost
by the way really enjoyed the project

Sammons: Those are good points. I honestly hadn't thought about a supercharger. Although I did find a video on Youtube of a supercharged 6.5 marine diesel. I will look into it. Thank you.

hey great job on the boat, i have been subscribed to this thread from the start of your project.

my boat started off with no engine too and i know how much work it is, and how good it it feels to be on the water!
Enjoy!

Luhrs,

I just spent the last 3 hours almost reading you're entire THREAD!! I am a brand new member to iBoat and Boating- All I can say is congratulations and AWESOME work!!! I can only imagine the blood, sweat, and tears you put into this project to make it the way it is.

You really gave me some inspiration to get moving on my boat. I just bought a 28 foot Chris Craft Amerosport 284 w twin 305s. Planning on doing a decent amount of work this winter to it.. I hope you can give me advice down the road in my threads!

Keep up the great work!

Yeah check superchargers out.

Basically you have a couple types- Centrifugal, Twin screw and Roots. Roots are the old school style people are used to seeing that came of diesel engines and people put them on gas ones. A 6-71 blower for a small block V8 came off a Detroit 6 cylinder 71 cubic inch per cylinder diesel.

Re: '77 Luhrs 28 ft. diesel repower SPLASHED!

Hi guys:

Thanks again for following my project. Overall I'm very happy with it. Did about 30 miles in the bay and Atlantic ocean last Sunday, with my cousins.

I think the supercharger might be disqualified based on the height it adds. I've only got about 30.5" of total height to work with in my engine bay, plus because of the V-drive the engine sits on a 5 degree angle. I could raise the deck I guess but I really don't want to do that.

So I'm back to looking at the GM 6.5 turbo diesel. The good thing about it is the turbo sits off to the side, so I'm still OK heightwise.
From the info on the Internet there are quite a few of them running around in boats.

Kylejb: Thanks for the compliment but don't start thinking I'm some kind of marine guru. This Luhrs is my first boat. I know a bit about engines but still not that much about boats in general. I go and read Frisco's and Oops' threads when I need to find out how to do something.

Hey Luhrs,

Great thread. I have always wanted to do just what you did. You could always drop in the 7.3 PS. Sorry, not trying to start a GM/Ford battle, but from what I've learned its a fairly over-engineered piece of metal and has a lot left from a performance standpoint. You could also take the easy way out and just buy a marine diesel...but what fun would that be?

Might have a hard time with the 7.3 and the bell housing. I told you to put that in my boat and use a small block in yours. Great build man.
