Hi, Gene.

What year is your Merc?
How long have you had the boat?
Did it ever run right for you?
What have you tried so far to locate the trouble?
Have you read through a half dozen or so other threads with the same symptoms to see what you might do?
Have you pumped the primer bulb while the engine is misbehaving?
Have you checked to see if all cylinders have hot, blue spark?
Have you determined if all cylinders are making power?

Let us know. :)

Hi JB

yes it is fireing on all cyl, and there is a blue spark on all three plugs,
the motor is a 1977 65 hp outboard Merc.
just got off the landline with a dealer in Dodge City, KS and he said it might just be dirty carbs, another said he had to put it on a dyno, and a 3rd was home, so I dont what hew thinks,
the boat did fine fer a couple days,
but I was puttering around in a no wake lake with it, then I went to one that I could play and it did ok first day and went south soon as I put a tube behind it, er a bathtub toy fer the kids,,and I have had it in my posesetion fer a couple weeks now

Re: 77 merc 65 hp

Nice work, Gene. Now we have more to go on.

Sounds like a fuel starvation problem to me, but that doesn't have to be carbs.

Check the fuel tank venting, fuel pickup in the tank, filter (if you don't have one, get one now.)and fuel lines for pinches or air leaks.

Get the engine out under load and: pump your primer bulb. If that doesn't help, spray some fuel mix directly into the carbs, one at a time.

If the primer bulb gets her going, overhaul the fuel pump. If you have to add fuel direct to the carbs and one of those picks it up, overhaul that carb.

If none of the above works, inspect your plugs immediately after a full throttle run.. A wet, oily plug hasn't been firing.

I don't know much about Merc ignitions, so we would then need some help from a Merc-spert.

Let us know what you find. :)
