Re: 78 105 Magnapower - Gear Box?
Hi Frank, JD......well finally had a chance to pull apart the lower unit and all went smoothly according to your instructions. To my surprise the only thing i found out of the ordinary was the pinon nut was loose! Is this a common problem? I tightened it back up and re-built. ran perfect in the driveway with muffs so i tested it at the lake this morning. backed in fine in reverse and went into forward but as soon as i reved it up the same thing happened as in post "1". After reading more of your posts about 85 lbs. of torque on the pinon nut i'm assuming it was nowhere close to that as i tightened it with an open end wrench and vice grips around the drive shaft. will pull apart again and use your tourque wrench and wood combo . any other suggestions? all the gears looked in great shape as well as the odd shaped brass yoke (?) that fits into the grooves of the peice (?) connected to end of the shift rod. Am i missing something or could my problem be this easy? it certainly didn't work before i took it apart and worked no probs without the force of the boat being in water.........thanks again ! Bob
