I have just taken a boat the I purchased to the lake for the first time. I has been rebuilt and I have a carb problem with the high speed adjustments. It works great with low speeds but when I give it full throttle it will not plane out and it wants do die when it is loaded. (ie. putting it back on the trailer. I would appreaciate any suggestions or ways that I could fix this. I have a Seloc manual repair manual and I will reading it tonight for more information. Is there a basic setting for this? It has 2 type 4 carbs. :D

Bill,

Were your carburettors also rebuilt/cleaned?
I had a similar experience with my '78 55 HP, it sat for a time and the fuel in the carburettors gummed up. Since the high speed orifices are in the bottom of the bowls they were clogged a lot. My engine ran good at idle also. It could be a couple of things, but if your powerhead was rebuild and your carburettors weren't it would be a good thing to do anyway, because dirty carburettors can ruin your fresh rebuilt powerhead.

should i worry about the link and sync after I rebuild them. To took them apart and cleaned them but I did not rebuild them with new parts. I will make sure that the brass high speed pickup tubes are clean. Any more suggestions to make this thing purr?

Help is greatly appreacitated.

What do you mean by "type 4 carbs"?

I think CorB may have hit the nail on the head. Especially about ruining a fresh powerhead. We prefer OE kits for the carbs.

Bill,

Yes you should worry about the link & sync, but not necessarily after a carburettor overhaul (if that is what you mean) because my personal opinion is (don't take it for granted, I'm not a specialist) that a carb overhaul would not mess up the initial settings that much. The question is if the link & sync was ok before the carb overhaul, if not it needs to be adjusted. But in order to get a good running engine all the settings need to be ok, like max. ignition advance, ignition timing @ idle, link & sync of carbs & ignition, sync of the 2 carbs to each other, max. opening of throttle butterflies and other things like compression, carbon build-up may have an effect on how it runs.

You don't need to replace all internal parts of the carburettors, but only those who are provided in a rebuild kit (like float, float needle, float needle seating etc..) don't forget to adjust the float setting also (follow your manual).

Although it sounds logical to me that it is a fuel delivery problem, you must not overlook the basic troubleshooting steps: compression ok? (compression test) spark ok? (spark test) fuel delivery ok? (check spark plug color, spray premixed fuel in carb throat while running) Do a search for these basic tests over here about the details.

Dhadley,

Unfortunately I'm speaking from own experience, caused by leaking crankcase halves :( Luckily only one Wiseco ruined and some mild honing of cyl 2.
