78 70hp Merc LU to Gearshaft Housing; Seal?

I am going to attempt to change the water pump impeller on a 1978 70hp Mercury Model 700 for the first time. I have a SELOC manual and have found a source for water pump impeller, seals, etc. (Shad Connection)<br /><br />Question:<br />Before I get started; is there any kind of seal or gasket between the lower unit and the gear shaft housing?

No seal there. Wait till you take the thing apart before buying parts. You probably need the pump kit that includes a new housing. When you remove the bottom section, pay careful attention to the metal thingy that guides the shift shaft inside the housing. It can fall out. I think mine was replaced wrong side up by the previous owner so I had a heck of a time trying to get it back together. Be sure you reverse lock is adjusted properly before you take it apart.
