I have recently purchased a 78 mercury 80hp 4 cyl and the previous owner had given up on it after doing a ring job and impeller and never being able to get it to idle. just before he gave up on it he took it to the shop and they gave him an $1100 estimate on replacing all electrical parts and a main bearing. being the motor didn't make any noise when run the only way i can figure they could tell is that the stator may have been getting rubbed by the flywheel and that would be the upper and lower main. Has anyone changed the upper and lower main bearings in one of theese motors and how could I check them?? Also is there any speacial tools needed??
Thanks,
Chris

Welcome to iboats. :)

The problem with replacing the upper or lower main is that you have to split the case to allow enough slack to remove the end caps. That's one reason for the high estimate. As far as replacing the entire ignition system, that motor obviously isn't worth it, even overhauled. They should find the part that has failed and replace that. Used parts can be found if new ones are unavailable, but most shops won't invest the time to find them. If the bearings are bad, you can usually hear it.

so it sounds to you that the shop is a rip off? That is what I thought as well until reading about the flywheel rubbing on the stator. becouse I feel that if it runs but will not idle it is most likley the switch box. guess I will have to buy a dva. But if it needs the upper and lower mains can a good auto mechanic do it without speacial tools? becouse I have a degree in auto mechanics and am quite good with most all projects.
Thanks,
Chris

P.S. I guess you feel there is no way all of the electrical components are bad??
The motor looks quite new almost hasn't seen much use by the looks of it

I wouldn't say they're a ripoff. Used parts are a gamble that most shops won't take, and wisely so. But regarding the ignition, I know of very few cases where one ignition part would damage another. It may not allow it to work, but it shouldn't damage it. Investing in a DVA would be wise if you're going to be working on that ignition system. They also have the usual multimeter functions and you can always use it anyplace you use a VOM.

Can a bad switchbox be the cause of faulty idle in an otherwise good running engine? I don't remember ever seeing that mentioned here.

Chuck

Yes I feel the same way that all the parts are most likley not bad. But do you need speacial tools to do the berarings???? are they a press fit??? Also is there a dva adapter made that you do not need a fluke meter for??
Thanks,
Chris

Mopar, mercury builds a puller to pull the end caps that hold the upper and lower main brgs. It's nothing speical just bolts thru a flat plate puller should be a picture of one in a manual.
