Re: 78 dodge reverse problem

Ayuh,..... Your Motor/Transmission mounts are Shot....Again I guess......

In Forward, it pulls the Right way... In reverse, it's pulling the Wrong way........

You might consider adding chain or cables to counter the force on your motor mounts.....

We used to do that in Drag Cars.....

Re: 78 dodge reverse problem

I would think anything bigger than 1/4" will do the job.......
I'd put 1 on each side...... That'll cover both forward,+ reverse.............

Re: 78 dodge reverse problem

is this a 3 mount or 4 mount system on your dodge? did you replace all, or just the front 2? If you did not change the rear mount/s at least give it/them a good look over.
I have broken mounts due to extream overloading, 4000+ lbs on (1/2) truck and a trailer over loaded behind it nad hills, chains or cables do help. at least the engine will stay close to where it belongs. and yes I did pop a tire from time to time.

Re: 78 dodge reverse problem

You have more problems than just the mount breaking. Unless you really work it hard under a constant load. Check the rear transmission mount. Find the problem before you chain the engine. This will work well, but whatever is causing the mounts to break may cause further problems. Some things I have found are the rear tranny mount may be bad, it may have a break in the frame somewhere, the bolts holding tranny to engine may be loose. It is possible that the mounts you are buying are poor quality, but there is more to it. The last possibility is that something in your transmission causing it to lock up in reverse. Maybe a torque converter problem. Check the rear mount first though.

Well its a 3 mount system I have replaced all three.
I have had this problem ever since I got this truck
It's not bad riaght after mount replacment
it is a manual.
I ever cahanged my transmission 2 years ago
but it made no diffeince. :(
I just replaced the front mount yesterdayand the one from the right side was ripped in half
the problem is the worst when I'm towing and tryto back up a hevy trailor.
I'm going to try the chain thing.

which engine do you have? the 360?
something I have seen give this kind of problem when loading down is --- someone changed the drive shaft and the replacement is to long, when loaded it puts stress on the mounts.
