Got the second crane put together today...was a gloomy day yesterday, so didn't do a thing on the boat...too bad cause I might have finished what I started tonight...

Got the trailer moved out from under the boat...rollers left a mark...

as did the bunks...

suspended animation....notice the water draining on the port side? This leaked there the last time I flipped it..and you notice it is heavy on that side...scared it has water in the deck...

Neighbor across the street thought I was going to hurt myself so he came over and gave me a hand...told him this wasn't the first time I had flipped this boat..but welcomed the help..

Too dark for picture of her sitting on the roller base...need to re-engineer what I have going on with that...thinking I will pull it in the garage with my come-along anchored to the floor....neighbors idea..I like it...
I ran out of boards to make the base correctly...tried to improvise...it's a wonder it didn't snap the boards I used in two...but I have a plan...just too late on a work night eve to get started on it now...put some jackstands under it for now to keep it from falling....will finish up tomorrow night...

Murphy prevailed today...

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Man, I sure do hate those gloomy days, really makes you feel like you are in Northern PA, or even New Jersey...

I am glad to see the flip went fairly incident free...

Did the rollers and bunks mark because of the long haul from LA.? From the roughness of the gel?

You still have some sanding and buffing left to do on the hull, right?

Most of that should come out and the smooth shiny bottom probably won't mark up like that...My best guess...

Might also look into making sure the weight is evenly distributed or possibly even add a couple of extra bunks?

Now, what's up with the water again?...coming from where?...again, maybe got collected during a possible rain storm or two during the transport phase?

I am sending nothing but good thoughts your way and a spaceship ticket, off world to that Murphy doood...

Have an awesome week!;)

Nice flip.. My gel coat marked up real easy until I started buffing it.. Those marks should sand out fine..

Sorry to hear Murrphy showed up.. He should be gone by tomorrow..:D

Hope you have a great week..

Gus - yes I think the rollor marks are from the trip north...

Decker...except for a minor mishap...Murphy has left the building...more in a sec...

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

The boss and a coworker said they would give me a hand with moving the boat...I was a little pessimistic to say the least...a little heave and ho...and one of the casters folded...of course the one I did not check to see if it was going the right direction...so a trip to get a replacement....no wallet...2nd trip to pick up a new one..some 3/4 ply under the casters...a big tugg...and she was in the garage!!

DSCF0448.jpg

I didn't trust the casters so blocked up the frame...and I really do not like what I did with the 2x6's covered with 2x4's holding the weight...but it seems stable...should be able to sand from the ground...not sure I can jump around on it like I did back in Louisiana...but it is out of sight of the neighbors..protected from weather...and near alll the tools all huge pluses...tomorrow will be a little cleanup time..then a little sanding time.....and if I keep up the old way of doing things...a little each day....I just might get her done...

Nice job on the flip Troop ! Yep my casters seemed a bit shaky also . Every time I needed to make a move I took a 2x4 and jacked it up then kicked the wheel in the right direction . Hopefully murphy stays away for a while ! Had a run in with him yesterday ..

Sorry about Murphy. I really Hate that Guy!!!
That's exactly why I bit the bullet when I built my cradle and used these...

Easy to roll around on Grass or Concrete. I even used em on my motor stand. $10.00 buck each but for me they have been worth it.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

is it wax on, wax off or stroke it?

Yard work...grass needed mowed...Still need to do the trimming with the weed wacker...do that tomorrow...got a late start on the boat work. started on a small section...wanted to see what it took to get it smooth....and got bare spots...more transluscent actually...every place I have tested this way has come out the same..decided that it was not worth the effort...so gonna prep for a full spray of gel...

cut me a block from the 2 part foam I have lying around.this stuff is the best thing ever for block sanding for me...thanks Gus!
DSCF0449.jpg

top part is what I am starting with...not knocking it down as far as that lower part..that was my test area,...
DSCF0450.jpg

this is about as far as I took it tonight....think this will be good for the next coat?
DSCF0451.jpg

another shot, but a little blurry..
DSCF0452.jpg

So experience is the best teacher I have been told...so I want to share what I have learned thus far when it comes to gel coat....

1. Read everything you can find on spraying gel if it is your first time! then read it all again and maybe even again so it sinks in...
2. Unless you just really love to waste money...and spend too many hours sanding...DO NOT TREAT GEL LIKE PAINT!!! It is going to take alot more coats than you might think...it looked to be spraying nice and thick when I sprayed the Ebko...but it is thin...see pics above...
3. Use a thickness gauge when spraying (Thanks GT...see below)
4. Any glass you exposed while doing your prep for spraying will have pin holes...so you have to fill em in...it won't look like it, but it is...full of holes...
5. Do a better job prepping than I did...I thought I had plenty of gel that would take care of some blemishes..not...
6. Wear your air filtration system when sanding the gel...I did not put any on tonight...nostrils were caked with the stuff just after a couple of hours...

I guess that is about it for now...I'm sure I forgot something though...

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Glad to have been of some help, Troop...

Another tip to keep in mind when prepping to spray...to fill pin holes, use a bondo spreader to smoosh either the gel coat or your fairing compound into the pinholes...Then while actually spraying the gel coat, keep the spreader handy for pinholes that "pop" up and for catching the inevitable runs...

Also try to have one of those fancy schmancy mil gauges with you to help determine the gel coat build thickness...

And Yep!, always wear protection...you never know what you'll catch...
