Alright guys.... I am pissed.......
Let's see....replaced the water pump good, replaced starter better, new spark plugs, new fuel pump, new cables .......rebuilt carbs per SELOC manual, replaced prop fixed spun hub...boat planes....(thanks for help all on that one.!!!)
engine now will idle in gear, and once in a while will rev, but usually dies out at throttle up..... Manual says that the low idle adjust should be made in forward gear. I cannot take the plug screws out without the engine stalling, never mind have a chance to tweek the idle set screws.....

on carb rebuild, took out the aluminuim covers for high and low idle, but did not remove the one in the float or on the right side of carb as you face the motor. Seloc manual does not mention doing this....

Motor sat two years before i bought it....and starts great....just won't go

Just built boat....pissed at motor...help please before I have to surrender to tech fees

Re: 78 evinrude 70 hp

You need to isolate the problem(s). When motor refuses to plane, try pulling plug wires off one at a time while running (you're going to want an insultated tool for this). If no RPM drop, that cylinder is not firing. The cause can be plug wire (or its termination), coil, powerpack and less likely timer base or stator.

If you have a shop manual, there are resistance checks for the stator and timer base. In fact, a shop manual will typically have an a trouble shooting flow chart to guide you in diagnosing.

Good luck.
